Any help appreciated. Looking for campsites or aires with easy access to the beach for body boarding holiday. Not too busy, good facilities. Cycling/walking paths a bonus.
Cheers

There is a site in Noja called ( I think) Playa joel or something like that.

I have stayed there a few times and it’s alright.

Right on the beach which has good surf seemingly most of the time. Occasionally I have seen the waves too big for me to venture in.

It’s a lovely area too with a nice walk to a little village called Isla which you get to via the beach.

Just watch the tides though with Isla as it cuts you off and then you would have to walk back by road which I would think is about 3- 4 miles

Lacanau-Ocean aire: set a bit back from the beaches but good cycle tracks for seafront access. Plage-Sud parking had no height barrier last time we were there but they're not keen on overnight MH stops there. OK for a day trip. Town has a surfy vibe to it - the WQS world tour competes there.

Biscarrosse-Plage aire: among trees, small supermarket nearby, resort is the tackiest I've seen in France but the aire backs onto dunes, and a quick hike later you're on the beach, which is vast. One or two rules on the aire aimed at keeping the new agers out, like no awnings, chairs etc but most ignore them. Cycle tracks all the way up to Dune du Pyla.

Mimizan-Plage: Big tarmac aire south of town with direct beach access. Fine if you just want to commute from MH to beach and back but I can't say I warmed to the resort.

Capbreton aire: similar set up to Mimizan, big tarmac aire next to beach. Bread deliveries in the morning. Some interesting WW2 bunkers between the aire and the town.

Biarritz-Anglet-Bayonne (aka BAB): three aires, one is a gravel surfaced spot with a bit of grass by the River Adour at La Barre, with one or two beachfront attractions nearby. Next one is Anglet Boulevard des Plages, which is marked tarmac bays next to the beach, and you'll need levelling chocks - that's our favourite in that area. Regular buses to the Grande Plage in the town centre, but be careful when the surf's up - there's a strong cross shore rip in front of the Casino into the rocks there. Third aire is Avenue de la Milady, which is our least favourite - south of town centre, tightly packed near a busy road and under the airport approach path, but with EHU (if required) and beach access. Good cycle track from Anglet and La Barre to Bayonne centre.

I stand corrected thanks, although it was my least favourite on that stretch of coast.

wouldn't say it was my favourite, but strange how we all have different tastes and views.. that's the fundamental problem with reviews on aires..

we had many great times on the aire, and even out of season loved going there.. first visited in Sep 2006 with the RV heading south to Spain, and returned many times afterwards....

The town is just holiday town, plenty of buzz in summer.. all but dead in winter, but it does have some history as a logging town.. there is an old wooden church with some fascinating photos showing some of the history .

We love Biscarrosse Plage, not the cheapest at 16euro during summer but sooo worth it for the beach and sunsets (y)

Soustons plage, one of our favourite Aires. About €7 a night including 16 amp hook up. Park in amongst the pine trees, big saltwater lake one side, short walk to the beach the other way.

too many to count.. literally dozens of aires, many on or near the beach

find them all on Campercontact

download the free POIs , load onto sat nav , and buy the phone app..

there is a cycling way all the way down the Atlantic coast

https://www.velodyssey.com
Thanks for that. We have camper contact and use it from time to time. But Carole likes her showers and prefers the safety of campsites.

If we did more wild camping we'd have to get a solar panel fitted and maybe gaslow/extra battery.

Looks superb. Just googled some pics. Is it easy to get to, the roads look pretty tiny in the lead-up.

It’s fine to get to. No problems at all with our 8 metre van.

The only problem on the site is that some of the pitches are not that easy to get onto with a bigger van in terms of having room to manoeuvre.

The position of the site and the adjoining beach is fantastic.

Thanks for the info. We stayed near Hossegor in a villa in 2004 and the surf was really wild. But fantastic, you just have to stay between the flags, although even then you can get carried along sideways pretty quickly.

Cheers. Our van is only 7m so should be OK. With it being new, still worried about white van man's wing mirrors and over hanging trees on narrow roads :D.

That looks cool, and great price. Wonder how busy that will be in June.

Wow, that looks great, just what we're looking for and the campers don't look too crammed in either. What time of year was that?
Steve
That was last week of July, so peak season. The aire was always busy but never full...

You sound like you've done Northern Spain a few times. Was thinking of taking the A8 across the top, and just diverting to the coast at various points to try out certain resorts/towns. Anymore recommendations apart from Noja, Chris.

Not really. I spent a week in Noja one Easter and the weather was great which I believe makes a change. We didn’t really go anywhere apart from locally. The other times have just been for a stopover before the ferry.

Soustons Plage Aire, does anyone know how full it gets at Easter. Looking to stop over there for a few days on our way back from Alcossebre.
