We’re on a site we’ve plugged lekky hookup in and there was a funny smell in van I’ve just checked batteries and one was red hot I’ve disconnected the lekky hook up and battery has cooled down is there any way to switch the battery to off and just use lekky.

It’s a Hymer van if that helps.

Disconnect the negative (v-) battery lead (usually the black one) and secure it away from the battery. That's the only way to fully isolate it.
If you don't have the tools just ask around on site, someone will have.
DON'T use the battery again, it has an internal short circuit and could explode if on charge.

Thanks for that will have a look I’ve switched everything off in van so hopefully we will survive and not blow up the campsite!!

Please be very sure that everything is turned off, the battery has fully cooled down and plenty of fresh air to flush the van through before disconnecting the failed battery. When they fail like that they expel sulphur dioxide, which smells and can be deadly and hydrogen that does not smell and is highly explosive in concentration.

Don't just fit another battery and hope that's it, the battery charger needs checking first

Thanks for your replies I’ve just realised we’ve been sat in it for 8 hours had gas on and telly and been in danger!! Spent most of the day telling Steve his feet smelt! Van doors all open realised we’ve got RAC cover and leisure batteries are included so have given them a call hopefully they know what they are doing

If we just disconnect both batteries can we just hook up to lekky till Monday and then get new batteries fitted then or not if not we need to head home.

Liz

No just the top one which I think was second they fitted at dealers bottom battery is cold as hell.

Yes, you can. The charger should be able to power the hab electrics providing you aren't using lots of 12v stuff.

How long ago was second (top) battery fitted ?

If you disconnect both but ensure the terminals can't short it should work on EHU, using the battery charger as a supply

Get plenty of fresh air to clear out the poisoning from your system. If you have a headache seek medical advice

No will just be fridge ignition I’m not sure what else we will have Steve put electric ring in this morning so can use that.

4 years ago when we bought it from dealer

Oh just told Steve I’m not feeling good but will sit out in rain hopefully that will do the trick

I would expect BOTH to be hot if it was overcharging Lenny.
Possible one may cook before the other just need to keep an eye on it just in case.

Will change both if we can find someone around here who can do it quick that way I’m not worrying does anyone know a mobile fitter around Ingleton if not will head home and see if caravan Dan can do them.

Liz

Not my first choice but any branch of halfords will supply and fit

We’ve got gell ones now not sure if they have them will look on web site nearest would be Kendal.

Liz

I doubt they will have gels, just lead acid ones. But it will get you through your holiday

Yep they will of course this would be a good time to change to lithium ones just mentioned this to Steve and he’s just ran off with his wallet!!

Thanks for all your help I hadn’t realised we were in such danger hadn’t given that a thought but will know if it happens again in the future.

For all you teckies on here on the shaults box I’ve got a switch on front up says Ein and bottom says Aus just curious what that is.

Just a little further than Kendal is Bardsea Leisure in Ulverston
Always helpful and always have a good stock of batteries. Caravan Motorhome dealers and campsite too

Off & On, if its a fairly old EBL best left alone, they tend to get a bit dodgy when old, turn it off and it won't turn on again.

Tayna batteries normally give the best deal on Gels, if buying 2 give them a ring and haggle, they will deliver next day.

Don't buy batteries from the RAC. Wait until you get home and order a proper one - or two from the battery supplier's

technically it's IN & OUT I thought

Mein Deutsch ist ein bisschen rostig

Thankfully I stopped Steve from doing that as wasn’t sure if that would isolate the battery from ehu.
Will look on web and get their details not confident about fitting them but will find someone who can.
Still waiting for RAC so might just disconnect them ourselves and see what happens.
Only 30 miles from home thankfully so will see how we get on.

Have the RAC turned up yet?
