When reading about batteries we often read about how many times they can cycle or how many times they can be recharged. I wonder what represents a cycle. Is it running a fully charged battery down to say 50% and then recharging it to full charge, on the other hand suppose a fully charged battery is run down to 75 % and then fully recharged does that or does it not represent half a cycle. If a battery manufacturer says that its battery can be recharged or cycled 200 times does that mean that if it is only run down to 75% it can be recharged to 400 times?

Something like that (for Lead-Acid).
I guess that manufacturers will be over-optimistic about their cycle count or, at the very least, count them under ideal conditions.
I've never counted my cycles, although some BMS do attempt to, but fancy that I've never achieved what they claim to be possible. If you only 'tickle' a battery, it will last longer than if you 'beat it up' regularly (I believe there are similarities in married life).

Interesting one. I have a couple of electric mountain bikes from different manufacturers with lithium ion batteries. In both cases it's accumulative so discharging a battery down to 50%, recharging to 100% and repeating one more time would be 1 cycle. I'm in the market for a lithium leisure battery but most seem to have cycle lives way beyond what I'll need. I also need a cheapo lead battery for run my diesel heater in my out building. It states 80 cycles so I've asked the manufacturer this very question as it will be hooked up to a battery charger and timer set to 2hrs per day to keep it topped up.

I bought two Yuasa enhanced lead acid from Alpha batteries. They have a stated cycle life of 200 but independent tests have shown they are capable of more, 230 was mentioned and as they are enhanced they charge faster than normal lead acid and a lot faster than AGM. at £129 each I think they are good value and will probably last me three or four years, (three year guarantee) and by that time lithium will have gone down in price even more.
