hi,
considering buying 2 new batteries, present are 2 x 110ah and at least 3 years old, I suspect the previous owner did not charge them through winter

I have room for 2 x 130ah, would this be a good idea, wiil they charge ok, i have 180w of solar, or should I stick to 110ah

thanks

130 would be better just make sure you only buy 'named' battery's. make sure you can fasten them down securely.
Charging wont be a problem - normally.

Presuming dimensions are fine I would go 130 for the extra small amount of dosh.
Ebay is the place to go and check the previous sales history
Probably 60 -70 nicker each

Just checked and as cheap as 50 nicker delivered !
Shocked myself there
A couple at the 70 mark and then quite a number around 75.
Dam site cheaper than when i had to buy one in France last year ! (200 euros)

Just search ebay for "130 leisure battery"
Change the view screen to cheapest first
You can view and see what they are

Yep - cheap generic battery with a flash sticker - might be OK for a year- I wouldn't waste my money.

Whats all that mean -- 12V 130AH 70 AH Leisure Battery ----- Capacity:70Ah@20hr

Different people quote battery capacity differently, to make them look better IMO 70 ah @20 hr rate says it will deliver 3.5 amps for 20 hours, over 5 hrs would give less amps and @ more hours would deliver more, not really sure where 130ah comes into it as even @100 hour rate I doubt you would see 130ah.

Does your charging system have a recommended maximum capacity?

My EHU charging system's documentation states 220Ah.

Just a thought anyway.

Why put 2 small in when 1 big looks neater ? Just binned my 110 amp hour and fitted a 180 amp hour and it only cost us £194.
Sure I read on here the make wast important it was the weight that you need to keep a eye on the heavier the better ( more weight = more lead)
So I bought a xplorer weighed in at 50 kg! In stead of the banner which was lighter.

A word of warning when comparing the AH rating of batteries look at the standard they are rated at. In particular the hourly rate. I just did a search for 130ah batteries and came up with one from Alpha Batteries a respectable company. It was rated at 132ah at the 100hour rate (you could discharge it at 1.32Amps for 100hours) the same battery is rated at 120ah at the 20hour rate (i.e. You could discharge it at 6Amps for 20 hours). It's also rated at 84ah at the 5hour rate (i.e. 16.8 Amps for 5 hours)
So is it a 130ah battery or a 120ah battery or a 84ah battery?
It's all three make sure you are comparing like for like!
If the supplier doesn't specify, fear the worst.

dont see how a battery can be discharged for the full stated ah, 1.32 x 100 hours = 132 amps is this possible

I had a really really good and extremely expensive battery bank of 4 x 250AH.
Each battery weighed about 75KG.

So what I do is 250AH / 75KG gives 3.33 AH per KG.

I judge all batteries based on this..

So the Hankook xl31 is 28 KG so I multiply this by 3.33 and that gives me 93 AH. My guess is that 130Ah battery would be lucky to get 100AH and probably lower once you take Peukert’s law into account....

Usually more lead = more capacity or longer lifespan.. So either they have passed up on lifespan or capacity...

It can but you will most likely kill it, it's just an indication of it potential capacity, work on max 50% discharge to be safe.

There's so much smoke 'n mirrors used in the description of batteries that it's difficult to compare value. As mentioned, weight is a good measure. Price alone is unlikely to yield the best result, unless that's all you can afford.

Yes it's possible, under test conditions, at the end the battery will be reading just 7.2Volts. The point I was trying to make was that manufacturers used to use the 20hour rate for general retail batteries, but to get a bigger headline rate some have started to use the 100hour rate.
Smoke and mirrors as @rogher said. Without knowing the measurement standard, you can't compare.
Standards are wonderful things, there are so many to choose from.

Just for clarity, I'm not shooting the messenger but I've just gone on fleabay and found this battery.

Spot the glaring Misadvert.
The photo clearly shows this advertised 130Ah battery has a sticker on the side showing it to be a 80Ah battery.

I only did the search to see what the prices were on "130 leisure battery" then change it to cheapest first.
