Know it sounds simple but over Winter the tap ends, kitchen and bathroom sink, seemed to prize off.

Unfortunately, they leak from the joint where they go back in. I bought new washers but the washers don't go inside and the joint still leaks.

I put the plumbers' floss stuff round the end and it still leaks.

So I put tape (see green in picture) around the male end but it won't go in fully and it STILL leaks. :(

Useless as I am at DIY I refuse to give up. Any suggestions please?

Maybe there should be an O-ring in there. Sometimes they perish and drop out. Is there a little channel for one?

Chances are the tap end where the spout fits in is split due to frost damage.
Thinnest part of the tap and Possibly underneath where you can't see.
Once thawed the crack closes up and is almost impossible to see... But it leaks.

New tap is the only solution.

On ours the spout had a split where it joined to the tap. You can buy just the spout and they just push on.
Cheers
Bernie

Thanks everyone. Looks like new tap end needed then.
:(
Just about to Google O ring.

Which part has the male end Joy, the tap or spout?

The tap, John. It has a sunken washer too ... which after trying to undérstand Google, may be an O ring. (?)

The male part has screw rings around it. Don't know if that relevant..

I had a leaky one in the bathroom and put sealant on the spigot and a little inside and that held for several years.

I shall now go and google 'spigot'. :)

Sorry spigot is what I call the male part.
Put sealant where marked in red.
Push spout on and wipe excess sealant off.

I suggested the tap was split thinking the spout was male, my mistake.
It will be the spout which split and pushing it over the male spigot will open the crack.
The seal is an O ring and sits in a groove in the male part.

... wow ... the next Banksy. ;)

Thank you will do that first. :)

Think you are right, John. WHY did it split in the first place do you think?

Keep the O-ring, you don't need a new one!
It's the tap you'll need to replace (doubt you can get just the spout).

Thanks everybody for your help. Much appreciated. As usual you have all sorted me out albeit with different ideas. Thank you. :)

image.jpg You think you’ve got problems!!

My tap started leaking 2 years ago,, I’ve superglued it, taped it,, now until I bother to get a new one I wrap kitchen towel round it,,

Could be any think joy.
Maybe got knocked up or down by accident (wouldn't take much of a knock) , maybe froze, maybe just brittle with age.

So, now you are the Funsters expert on O rings, taps, washers and spigots. That’s official! We hope to see evidence of your expertise on here in future.....no longer can you get away with the helpless female con!! ;););):D

you can buy replacement spouts, as water left in the tap freezing and splitting the spout whilst laid up over winter is very common

Joy, I think they are a poor design. We have the same tap and have replaced twice in 3 years. Guess that’s why dealers always have replacement spouts in the shelf.I think we payed about £12 last time. There are 2 finishes - brushed or shiny!
Cheers
