Afternoon all. I have had to replace the handle on my habitation door as it has perished and snapped a vital part off, I ordered a new one which came today. I knew it wouldn't have a barrel as i wanted to keep the original. I have managed to remove the old barrel from the old lock but can't work out how to get it back into the new handle. I'm sure there is a method. Has anyone ever done this themselves if so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Ste.

Try a google of

Zadi removal tool

An extra long key that can remove an unlocked barrel, if indeed you have that type of barrel.

Hi Sandral. I have already removed the barrel following a sequence of trial and error but can't find how to fit it back into the new handle.

I swapped barrels on a new lock and as I recall there is just a spring clip holds it in place, didn't seem a problem at the time.

If the barrel looks like this the normal key retracts all the tangs apart from the brass one which is the one that retains the barrel in the handle. The handle will have grooves along the slot which the barrel slides into using the Zadi lock tool, which retracts the brass tang until it reaches its locating groove at the end of the handle body. Insert lock tool key (red key) into lock, insert barrel into slot in handle, push all the way in, rotate a 1/4 turn to release the brass tang then withdraw the red key. The normal key should now function properly.

Any progress with this one? I have the same problem. I have a complete new handle locked in to the housing but the new barrel with the red key doesn't turn the 90*.

The red key is not for operating the lock, merely to extract it. Once the barrel is in place the red key should be extracted which releases the pin that holds the barrel in place, the normal key should then function in the usual fashion.

Hi, from what I can see in the video the barrel has not gone far enough in. The chrome front should be almost flush with the black surround. Unless it goes far enough into the slot the securing pin will not find its anchor slot.

The grooves in the slot are different lengths so must get the barrel the correct orientation for the pins to seat properly.

The door lock should also be in the 'unlocked' position for extraction and replacement

Did you push the red key in until it clicks? The very end of the key needs to retract the brass tang before the barrel will locate.

When inserting the barrel try offering it up 180degrees to the approach in the video. i.e with the brass tang facing down.

Hi,
I think the problem might be that the handle/lock is not in the 'open' position because the handle doesn't spring out from the housing. I'll remove the circlip and dismantle the lock tomorrow and keep you posted. Thanks for your help.

If I remember correctly with the habitation lock you have to turn the lock 180 degrees with the key then hold the barrel to stop it springing back then remove key insert the red key then you should be able to remove the barrel with a bit of a struggle

My thanks to everyone who has contributed, this forum has been a great help. I checked out the post mentioned by AXO66 above and have sorted it. The crucial thing is to unlock the handle as described below. After that the barrel is easily and securely fixed

The post:

Sorted, barrel now in the new handle lock .

Only point to be aware of is in the picture above there is a lug at the end of the barrel.
The corresponding ”slot” to accept the lug in the new handle rotates. You have to line it up , by using screw driver, to the right position. That is unlocked .

Then slide the barrel back in with the tool key in, pull it out and then lock with your usual key.

I had to hold the handle down against the spring, The tool key was also difficult to slideout , needed wriggling. Maybe my barrel is a little worn, but easy to put new one in now, cos I know what to do!

Glad it was sorted. The need to wriggle the lock tool is often because they have not been machined cleanly. The two cuts nearest the red end may need a small bit of filing so it does not present a 90 Degree face to the tangs, the cuts should be a gentle 'V' shape, mine had a sloped cut for inserting but a 90 degree opposite which snags.
