Hello All,
Just had a look at my hab battery and was surprised to find it really quite hot and a smell in the compartment. It has been on hook up since yesterday afternoon. MH is 18 months old.
I had 'ordinary' Varta leisure batteries in my last MH without a single problem for 10 years.

I'm having some other warranty work done on Thursday and they are going to have a look at this as well. Ideally I'd like to sound as though I know what I'm talking about so I don't get fobbed off.

Cheers
Chris

MY advice is to stop the charge on it immediately and vent out the dangerous gas (that is what you are smelling). Sounds like a charging problem or faulty battery, either way your getting it sorted along with other work .

Hi, mine was like yours it was a duff battery and was gassing off and was too hot to touch so be careful as gas is explosive and let battery cool down and vent it off well before moving it .

Thanks for the replies guys. I took it off hook up straight away and left the locker door (to the outside) open for a while. Just checked it again some 2 hours after I first noticed and no smell but the battery is still surprisingly hot though a bit cooler I think.

Thanks again, hopefully get it sorted on Thursday.

In our last van both Banner AGM's failed in 18 months, wouldn't replace under warranty as they pass a CCA test at 80% . In lesiure type use the were only good for 10a/h.

I fiitted a couple of Sonnenschein 78a/h Gels, still got them as when I changed the van they were only just over a year old and and I didn't want the AGM that came with the van also fitted a third one.

Lenny, I've googled and it seems your AGM experience is not an isolated one. I'll certainly be looking for a replacement under warranty.
And Martin I hadn't thought of that. I have about 20 miles to go to the dealer so I'll disconnect in the morning.
Presumably the battery would have got hotter and hotter. We feel as though we have had a narrow escape.

Thanks
Chris

As yours were getting hot they will probably fail a CCA test so should be straight forward getting them replaced.

Out of interest, are they Banner AGM batteries, and if so what type are they?

Banner AGM Running Bull.

What charging profile was the charger set for? Wet lead-acid, AGM, Gel...?

This I don't know but I will certainly be asking tomorrow at the Dealer.

Well, the Banner Running Bull AGM battery has been replaced with Varta G14 Silver AGM battery. The charger (Dometic) is suitable for use with AGM batteries so is not the culprit here. So it was the battery that gave up after 18 months.
Hope the new one lasts longer though it does have a 4 year warranty.

Thanks
Chris

Good result we had a pair of running bulls on our Exsis I for three years without any problems at all but I suppose we were lucky.?

The Varta's do appear to last longer than the Banner.
The Banner AGM is a Type 2 AGM and bulk charges at 14.2v.
The Varta is a Type 1 and the bulk charge should be 14.8v.
