It's £5 a month for the Santandar 123 current account and they only pay 1.5% now so if you had £20,000 in it to get interest on for a year, you'd actually only get a rate of 1.33% in reality which equates to £12 per thousand (excluding the cashback as that's variable depending on what bills qualify for cashback and how much you pay via DDs).Yes, £6 per month.
But, they also pay a very good rate of interest on balances up to £20k plus cash back on many bills paid by D/D.
As long as you can keep a good balance in the a/c you make money.
Every little helps.
Richard.

My monthly charge with Santander 123 is £5.00 with the 1.5% interest and 1%, 2% or 3% on D/D to variety of payees.Yes, £6 per month.

You have an extra credit card in your wallet so no need to compare rates while on holiday that is done beforehand. Every time you are using a Debit Card you are paying extra and every time you choose £ you are paying extra. A little planning would save you the cost of a meal over three weeks. We have come to Ireland on a whim at very short notice. I didn't investigate options beforehand, and I'm just using my Nationwide Visa Debit card exactly as I would in the UK. Sometimes I am offered the choice of paying in GBP rather than Euros, and I take that option. I have no idea whether that's better or not, life's too short.
I suppose that if we were going to be here for more than three weeks, and I had had the opportunity to make some other arrangements, I might have done something else. But comparing exchange rates and that kind of thing is not really something I want to be doing while I'm on holiday. I do appreciate that my card might not be accepted everywhere, but that doesn't seem to be a problem in Ireland.

Revolution, works brilliantly. But would love to find a Visa alternative that is no fee and good rates for payments and cash.
No, in French.Yes the BOI account has limited to no fees when paying in or withdrawing Euros and very attractive account fees.
For your French account, do you have on line banking in English?

We got a new Zero card only a couple of months ago, so looks as though they are still available but may only be for existing customers but not sure about that.Sadly, as we have one and it's excellent, I don't think the Zero card is available to new applicants now.
They stopped issuing them a year or two ago.
Richard.
Perhaps so, I am just quoting my t&con my new account and their website info.Rules must have changed then because in 2014 we loaded our clarity card before going to Canada for 2 months.

What's the worst thing that can happen if they get upset.
You take YOUR money elsewhere.
There is no sanction they can impose.
(Other than, of course, closing your account, and no one goes on their travels with one card)
They could of course remove your ability to pay off more on your CC than is owing on the account. This would be a simple thing to do.
However, at the place Online it tells you what you owe and then there is a box that you can fill in that says ' Other Amount'.
They could indicate at that place that you cannot pay more. They do not.
They could make it that you could not pay more than what is owed. They do not.
It may be their Rules but they've got the ball, so to speak. If they allow you to play your game that's down to them.
I don't think the Zero card is available to new applicants now.

Martin Lewis's web site as a good value option.
When Martin says 'even if repaid in full', that's when you have a monthly direct debit set up to pay off the whole amount at the same time each month, so if you draw out cash at an ATM say 3 weeks before the date it is due to be paid off in full by your DD, you'd still be charged interest on the cash withdrawal for those 3 weeks, but if you go on line and pay it off the same day you withdraw the cash then there won't be any cash interest charges.I I don't understand Martin Lewis' statement (even if repaid in full) I am guessing he means if you wait and let the direct debit (monthly) pay it off. I mean to do it virtually immediately via my phone app. I can't see how they can charge interest if it is already paid up ?
there won't be any cash interest charges.

Ahhhhhh .... but there is a way round that .... If you open a couple of Tesco internet savers you can use these to provide you with the DDs you need.is still a good earner, I would do another Lloyds but can't come up with another two direct debits, bummer !

That's very useful to know we were going to open a couple of Bank of Scotland accounts but run out of DD's, they pay 3% on £3000 - £5000.Ahhhhhh .... but there is a way round that .... If you open a couple of Tesco internet savers you can use these to provide you with the DDs you need.
These particular saving accounts are topped up by 'pulling-in' money from non-Tesco current accounts via DD, not by you transferring funds across by either standing order or manual transfer as you would normally do for saving accounts, therefore you can set up as many DDs on these Tesco internet savers as you need, there's no limit on how many you set up and how little the amount is ... I've used this on several bank accounts to provide sufficient DDs to meet their terms ...
