A leader of the transport combine in the Westcountry (BBC news today). Wants all caravans banned from Westcountry roads in July and August. They should only use those roads in July/August between (I think I heard right) 6.00pm evening and 7.00am in the morning.

Living the dream.
Sounds like a right k**b. Bet the people who rely on tourists no matter how they get there will have something to say about that.

Might as well ban HGV's too while he's at it.

So if you work on Friday you drive to the campsite during the night and park outside before 6am, thereby blocking the road?
And whilst you would like to leave on Saturday, you wait on the pitch until the last possible moment (preventing others entering), then park up outside until 7pm (creating even more chaos?).

Sounds good to me - Gordon

They do that on the Amalfi coast. The road just can't cope with numpties at the height of summer.

Everyone is a winner. The big vehicles get there on quiet roads, local traffic survives.

I would like to tell him... fine.. keep your West Country, it's way too busy, over priced, over rated, over commercialised, full of crap tourist shops selling Chinese junk, crap pasties and over priced cream teas..
The locals struggle to smile even when you're handing over hard earned.. .. and can't wait till you eff off back home..

Give them a miss.. head to Wales.. Pembrokeshire.. nicer than the West Country, lovely unspoiled beaches, cheaper , more space , less crowded.. and the locals are lovely.. :D

He ought to realise that in Germany lorries are banned from the roads on Sundays unless they are categorised as absolutely essential goods.

Lorries are just as much a pain as caravans and horse boxes are probably worse but farm vehicles the worst of all.

Lorries in convoy, lorries overtaking each other and taking 5 miles to do so and creepy crawlies out for a Sunday afternoon jaunt - please have a thought for everyone else on the road!

Everyone has a job to do so we just have to live and let live and try to be reasonable to each other.

The UK roads are just going to get busier and busier so the problem will get worse and not better.

I would like to see compulsory testing (MOT's) of caravans and trailers and weight testing as so many are unroadworthy or overloaded or being towed by inadequate tow cars. How often do you see the caravan arriving on site and it taking hours to unload all the crap that they have brought with them? Those that do things properly are excused from my rant!

applies equally to motorhomers....

Have you read how much booze some say they bring back from abroad ?
you'd think they were stocking up Tesco's..

no wonder they need additional air bags

Thought you still did all that, just a lot more subtly. We had a major sailing championships at Mounts Bay. The sailing club added 50 p a pint to their beer prices the day before everyone turned up. One guy who arrived early and found out was appalled and vowed never to return.

And the pasties were crap
