At the rear of our house is a patch of land, on which we would like to park or van when not in use. It will also double up as a handy "spare room"

At present it is dirt, but we may grow some grass on it.

What is the best way of protecting this area for irregular use? Are these grass / ground meshes any good?

If it's just gonna stay as an unused piece of land except when you put your MH on it then I'd put in some pavers for where the MH will sit and put weed suppressant material down with chipped bark or stone/chips on top ... much easier to look after than grass!

Since 2008 after caravanning for 20 years
We used stone chips over a membrane, several flowers have seeded themselves on to it so it both looks nice and requires no maintenance.

Check how soft the ground gets when wet... if soggy under foot maybe a few inches of MOT1.. (Crushed aggregate) that goes of if put down dry and a drop of rain on it .. like concrete.. (Membrane First)..

Then crushed aggregate and topped of with a few inches of washed 20m gravel.. (y)

Few potted flowers placed round and will look nice...

I'm all in favour of gravel.

A couple of weeks ago this ground was overgrown.
The ground is rocky but was reasonably level.
I dug out all the crap then concreted the edging stones in place.
Next came a couple of tons of 20mm "crusher run"....(crushed stone down to dust...locally £33 per ton delivered)
If your ground is soft I would lay 6" at least.
I have a petrol "whacker" plate so it then took a beating.
Next came a couple of tons of 20mm gravel levelled with a rake. (Price just gone up to £40 per ton.)
I used to park my 7500kg RV here on concrete pavers so I know it won't sink.
Last pic is what it was like.

Dear god, it was hard work keeping the wife supplied with cups of tea while she built that!

... its surprising just how large an area it is once it's cleared ... and if it was our place it WOULD have been me doing it with hubby keeping me supplied with buckets full of tea!!!! :D
