I know there are different opinions on how awnings should be secured down... Is it best to secure over the canopy or over the aluminum arms.

With our Omnistor we have some clever little clips that clip into the frame, which then have straps and we use pretty heft spikes with springs on straps

That said it still does it best to collapse even with gusts, so I put it away rather than take any chances

So in answer to OP neither above for us

Same here. Fiamma make equivalent specialist straps but I can't remember how they fit. Somebody told me that straps over the top can wear the fabric and over the arms can bend them.

When we bought our Omnistor straps they were about the same price as the universal straps anyway.

Dont the new strap kits slide into the groove in the front rail where the front panel would go if using a privicy room.

That's what I couldn't remember earlier. I've certainly seen some like that.

Over the aluminium.

Over the fabric and it will distort it and eventually rub through it.

Have always put the awning tie down strap below material over the aluminium supports and pegged forward of the awning that helps to prevent the arms from flexing when windy.

Don't talk to me about awnings.

We are in St Ives and I had just clipped my Kampa awning into the wind out when the heavens opened and it is absolutely pi$$ing it down.

The awning is hanging limply against the hab door , while Mr and Mrs Smug next door ( who put theirs up before it started raining) are enjoying a drink in theirs and probably laughing at us.::bigsmile:

It's up now, to a fashion.

Looks scruffy compared to Mr and Mrs Perfect with their Kamp Air Pro XL whatever.

Guess what we are buying next, I am told:Doh:

Glad this thread's come up - I'd forgotten that I emailed JC twice last year asking if I could use the same straps on my sun canopy (it appears to have the slot on the front), and never got a reply. Will try again.

Thanks Shifty :thumb:

The Fiamma tie down kit I have has bits of metal that hook into the track, works well unless you want something else in there

many many years! since I was a kid
whichever version of the tie down straps you use or even guy lines, never try to pull them too tight. the plastic elbow fittings and leg tensioners dont like it and can be easily damaged.

wherever possible always fix the tie down to the metalwork, as straps damage the fabric too. the latest version are best, as they simply slide into the channel on the front edge of the awning, which is much safer and stronger if caught by a random gust of wind. well worth it for well under ÂŁ20 a pair
