Did VW thing for 3 years now a little more comfortable
We are thinking about getting a wind out awning for our 2020 Escape 664 and would like any recommendations on type of awning and where to have it fitted. We are currently looking at the Thule Omnistor 6300 because it sits on top of the van and is less obvious when not deployed. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Steve.

My advice is to visit a suitably large supplier of caravan and MH equipment. If they are any good they will take measurements and suggst the best fit and options. Or don't bother and buy a Quest pop up.

Try John Cross Motorhomes.

Have a look at the Fiamma F65 ones which can sit on the top too I believe.

Johns Cross are the UK importer for Fiamma. And you get a 10% funster discount, if you become a subscribing member.

I wouldn't bother with a wind out awning, just have a windsail type canvas awning. Plus a pop up. No issues with wind or damage to the van. No real additional weight issues.
Plus you will be a lot better off. (y)

Before buying an awning think about when/how you'll use it:
  • Is it for when you're on a site and will want to use it a lot whilst sitting out and want to leave it out all the time (suitable secured/pegged)?
  • Will you want to move off during the day thus needing to retract it each time?
  • Will you want to use an enclosure with it (safari room etc)?
  • Do you need it to be permanently attached to the MH?
  • Will you be using aires/wild camping where putting out a freestanding awning isn't possible (even though you're not supposed to use attached ones either but people do)?
We have a fitted awning and on our last holiday of over 2 months I don't recall us using it as we wild camp and use aires, never sites, if it hadn't already been on the MH we wouldn't have bought one for it.

Hi Mel, we have considered the points you raise previously and the overriding thing is that it be effortless to setup (as dictated by the better half in this relationship). We don't intend on leaving it up in bad weather or using it to store items outside the van. It will be there to provide shade and shield us from the rain when using the BBQ. We also don't have a lot of storage for a soft awning. Although we have looked at the Fiamma F65 which seems to be equivalent to the Omnistore 6300 the type of awning may be dictated by who fits it and we are currently talking to Rose Awnings in Devon who have been very helpful and are Thule distributors. I am really surprised by the comments of Swift dealers I have talked to about fitment and the fact that they all said they would have to determine where there structure of the van was in order to fit the awning (a task that adds quite a lot of money to the fitting cost) when I had expected a certified dealer to know where the fitting points are on a van they sell. I guess I may be expecting to much!

I'm not sure what the dealers are talking about as they should be able to get the info direct from Swift for your model. As for which make of awning both Thule and Fiamma will do one that will suit your MH.

I am selling two a quest pop up screen house and a Thule quick fit which fits under a Thule omnistor both are as new.
