Please help,

I recently bought a cheapo dash cam and I am trying to view the files on my laptop.
File properties indicate AVI format. windows media player starts to play the file then stops saying it has encountered a problem (windows 7)
but doesn't explain itself.

any suggestions?

Cheers

I use this to view the files rather than media player.

Also are you using a decent class 10 sd card, some of the ones around are not up to scratch.

Try playing it after opening it in windows movie maker, or try playing it with quicktime player . .

VLC plays pretty much everything - it's a good substitute for Windows Media Player.

.AVI isn't one standard, it's a format label that covers a number of different video types. It used to cause me endless bother when I taught Media and tried to get children to bring video files into school from their digital cameras at home. One way to try and get proper playback is to download as many codecs (software that interprets video files) as possible.

The free K-Lite Codec Pack is widely considered to be as comprehensive as it gets. Just download and install from (excuse the split URL - the page editor is playing silly buggers):
