Autoglass went from being just about the best to a total shower of incompetent untrustworthy numpties within in a year of Belron taking over
Every fitter at our local depot left within months of the take over.. Word soon spread and it seems they only get fitters who might be classed as less than at the top of their game ( apparently :) )
Belron acquired Autoglass in 1983 and there's not been a change of ownership since then, so are you talking about something in the 80s?

Used to use Autoglass for all my aerial rigging vans up until 1980 when I sold the firm and went on a mental sabbatical ( worked as a long distance motorcycle courier , no thinking required :) , for a couple of big transport companies... ) it was during that time the big changes happened.. Both firms I contracted to ditched Autoglass

If you need a replacement via insurance do you have to use Autoglass if insurance company direct you to them?
No. They will be the “approved” supplier but they can’t make you go there. The same as the bodyshop that they “tell” you to use after an accident. It’s your choice but potentially more hard work as it isn’t what they want as they aren’t earning money from it like they are with companies they’ve done deals with.

I go to an independent glass company. They deal with my insurance company, and often loose my excess as they can still make money. I’m picky who fits my screens.

We had insurance company builders in after leak on washing machine. The last straw was when i came home and the floor tiler had been grinding travetine tiles in the house and tried to mop up,the house was white throughout. Kicked them out got insurance ombudsman and got money to rectify the shoddy work.

Autoglass have provided me with great services over the last 20 yrs or so. 3 windscreens replaced on different vehicles (all common types) without any issues.

Check your policy wording carefully as some, not all, make life difficult if you choose not to use their authorised agent. They will quibble on price and slow to pay out

It's pretty specific what can and can't be repaired to pass an mot. Size of damage and field if view all matter. No point getting a repair if it will fail an mot.
After a repair there should be no sign that it has been repaired?

When I bought this van the screen had 4 x chips in it. I asked but no chance of screen being replaced by garage unless ITV required it. Been the same now for 2 years & 30k kms but I cannot summon up the enthusiasm to remove the external sun visor & brackets, the glued on internal camera + aerial + sat nav aerial + other various screens .
I though that I had the impetus to get it changed the other day when a lorry threw up a cricket ball sized stone that I couldn't believe never punched right though the screen.
I even had my hand up to deflect it from hitting my head ,yet it bounced straight off the screen ,forwards & up & over the sun visor. I couldn't believe it?
The actual screen is definitely a replacment & isn't well fitted.
There is no point having the chips repaired at 40€ a time as a new screen would be cheaper.

Most recent update......

'Screen ordered through SMC, after a bit of discussion with Ageas who kicked Autoglass into touch and said get it ordered through the main dealer.........then said by the way there's a £1000 excess payable if you don't use Autoglass. That conversation was not easy listening for the insurance company !!!

All ordered with £75 excess (which they've waived).....just waiting for the 'screen now.

Regards, Rob.

When we had a new screen in the MINI the technician said BMW just buy them from the windscreen factory and print BMW on them, they're all the same screens.
Probably right, how many glass factories will produce a A class screen it’s a specialist item and limited production.

Why is it then when you phone Autoglass, National Windscreens answer and Autoglass do the job.
When I phoned Autoglass, National Windscreens answered I quired them and they said they were Autoglass.
Possibly outsourcing you see all sorts of companies with ‘working for’ on the side of there vans

Long time
We had a screen replacement a few years back, on a Hymer.
Autoglass sent two big burly chaps out, didn’t take them long and they did a good job even one of them giving us his mob number if it needed adjusting or sealing.
Apparently they have/had a separate team for Motorhomes.
Autoglass also came out to seal a chip, which we couldn’t find after he had done it!

panel van conversion
My Peugeot van screen got hit by a stone very early in its life. My insurer uses auto windscreens as their agent. Took several weeks to source the windscreen and it was eventually sourced via a Peugeot dealer. Markings were exactly the same as the factory screen. Delay was due to the van having the ADAS camera and was specced with the heat reflective option when the van was ordered. The screen was replaced on my driveway and I was/am happy with the work. I removed and replaced the Remis cab blinds myself. The van then needed to have the ADAS recalibration done. Closest Peugeot dealer was a 1 hour 15 min drive away - not great. The dealer asked to have the van for the whole day as they required to do a lengthy test drive as part of the recalibration process. On picking up they had put 17 miles on the odometer. Don't know how much this all cost the insurance co but I paid £70 xs and cost of fuel/train fare back/car fuel to pick up plus time spent etc.

well heres a surprise, theA class motorhome i just bought had a new screen very recently before i bought it.
Just noticed its leaking today. Asked the previous owner who fitted it... any guesses who??

Im miles from anywhere in Scotland, the closest windscreen places wont come out this far. Cheers Autoglass.
Ive had to log a call with Autoglass now, waiting to hear when they can come out.

I have some Captain Tolley crack repair with me, I might just try to tape the top of the screen where its leaking for now so it drys out, then use the Captain Tolleys once we get the dry weather this week.

Have owned my moho for 2.5 years now
I have had issues with Autoglass. Wind ripped my rooflight off whilst at flamborough. Rang my insurance (Caravan Guard) for adivce to be told its ok your policy comes with storm damage cover just ring the glass line. Great i thought. Ring glass line (autoglass) yep no problem we will take your details. Autoglass will be in touch next day. TBF to them they were. Wanted the photos and measurements. These i emailed by return. Then nothing for a few days. Called and said it had gone to the specials team they will be in touch. I recieved an email wanting more pictures whilst in London(without the Moho) so emailed back explained and did they really need them. No reply to the end of the week to say had i sent the photos off. After picking myself up from the floor i explained and went and got the photos having to take off protection to stop for water ingress. Photos sent. email to say part ordered will be 7 working days we will be in contact. Nothing from them. on 8th working day phone call and emails sent. response was the part is in leeds which is your nearest depot to Bridlington. Said i hadnt been in bridlington for two weeks. Ok we will get it couriered to you local depot over night and be in contact. Next day no contact a stropy phone call to find it was in birmingham. Finally a date booked for just three days hort of a month when the damage done. Have spoken to insurance and they are putting in a complaint.

Not happy about the take it took happy it is fixed now tho

thought id update this having now spoken to Autoglass..

Having explained I needed an urgent repair because the windscreen THEY fitted in May this year was leaking badly and risked causing electrical failure, the girl on the initial call was great, took all the details (i explained im the new owner and just it resealing at my own cost) and said someone would be in touch shortly.

DAYS later, nothing. Other than a "rate my experience" email from them. I contacted them again via the online support.
Days later again, I got an email stating because the windscreen was fitted when the previous owner had the vehicle they cant help.

I replied stating I knew that already and wasnt asking for a warranty claim, just for them to FIX IT before it causes major damage. The reply was, they dont reseal windscreens but they would replace the entire screen for £1800 (presumably plus VAT and not an OEM screen).
I told them if their monkeys bothered to fit the screens correctly in the first place I wouldnt be needing a new screen within 3 months of their last failed installation.

So anyway, heres what the top seal of an Autoglass professionally fitted windscreen looks like after just 3 MONTHS.

I can probably reseal it myself as i have some sikaflex deck sealant (liquid rubber) with me, but the dealer i bought the van from wants to speak to Autoglass head office about it so Im not going to touch it yet.

Shocking incompetence.

It's just so disappointing, why can't these specialist companies actually get their acts together and train their staff to do a proper job without there needing to be a continuous fretful worry about whether they have actually done a proper job? Dreading the day we get a stone whack on the windscreen, knowing our luck, we will get right royally stuffed!
