My Sprinter based Hymer was taken for some diesel this morning, but went off along our road it didn't change up, stopped at the junction the box still wouldn't change automatically I shoved the stick left and it changed, This went on several times for about two miles . It was holding in gear on a hill in slow moving traffic and then started working properly. It has done 26000 miles in two and a half years and is due a gearbox oil/filter change at 32000 in a few months. It was 0 degrees this morning but the Merc ATF is like water at normal temperatures, It worked OK after working a little through the torque convertor on the hill.. Is it the Temperature of the oil first thing after standing in the cold for two weeks????
Should I bring forwards the oil change to now? there are no fault codes showing on the MB computor I use to check codes and faults.

My Mercedes auto box experience was similar but ours is much older than yours

Our MH would virtually refuse to move on a cold engine, even worse when in cold weather

A gear box oil change fixed it completely, hope yours is as easy (y)

and yes I would be inclined to have it done early (y)

I would be inclined to get the oil changed soon, at least you know it’s been done, and they should clean any filters and check if there is any sludge.
A few years ago, I had a Merc auto car, on very cold mornings, the gears would hold longer than I thought necessary and it would work fine when it was warm. I had the oil changed and it felt like a new gearbox with no prolonged changes when cold.

Common with auto boxes when cold conditions , one method is select D and hold on brakes and speed warm up by increasing revs ,
maybe not the best way to do regularly , particularly if you are the one paying the bills .

Oil and filter changes as stated can help , but still happens at very low temps .

Only happens on trq converter boxes , not auto changed manual boxes.

Forte Make an Auto gearbox conditioner
freeing of sticky valves, works well
used in all my auto boxes for years as both preventative and a cure

At 26000 it is probably time to do the gearbox oil and filter change, it is the first time and the accumulated muck from being made and run in is building up. I have all the required material and will do it when I can get over a pit. You have to drop the sump to change the filter. MB wanted £450 to do it with an engine oil changes. Oils are genuine so I will be doing that soon. Oil and filter changes done at half recommended Mileage although I the van gets good runs when it goes out, always at least 500- 1000 miles

My Mitsubishi auto does not change up into top gear until it reaches a specific temperature, it is apparently designed this way and there are a few lines in the workshop manual to clarify that it is not a fault. I don't know if Merc's are the same but it might be worth having a read through the manual before you get too worried.

Quite a few autos do that , but you should not get slow change in low gears , same reason you should not rev turbo engines straight from cold .
