With many of us hoping to hit the slopes this winter and all trying to keep up to date with a constantly changing situation, I wondered whether it might be useful to have a page devoted to each of the main skiing countries in europe. The purpose being to locate up to date info quickly without having to scroll through lots of info. So with this in mind, I would suggest Funsters not add general comments to this page, only factual information relevant to the country in question (to the best of our knowledge).

From 5 November to 2 December 2020, travelling away from home, including internationally, is restricted from England except in limited circumstances such as for work or for education. Different rules apply in Scotland, Wales and Broken Link Removed. You must follow all the rules that apply to you.

The FCDO advises against all but essential travel to:

  • the whole of Austria based on the current assessment of COVID-19 risks.
If you are returning to the UK from Austria, you will need to self-isolate on your return (unless you are exempt).

  • Entry to Austria from the UK without the need for a COVID-19 test or quarantine is now possible
  • If you have been in a country other than the UK in the 10 days before you arrive in Austria, depending on the country you may need to self-isolate on arrival or provide a medical certificate showing a negative test result for COVID-19

Austria is currently in a lockdown situation until 30th November. From 03.11.2020 the measures in place to restrict the spread of the coronavirus in Austria were tightened. This means that all ski lifts and gondolas may no longer be used for leisure purposes. As a result, skiing is only possible for professional skiers. Glacier ski resorts that had already opened have now been asked to close. Most resorts are currently aiming to open early to mid December. Ischgl and St Anton have postponed their start dates to 17th December.

From 3 November, 00:00, a curfew will be introduced in Austria. This means that it is not permitted to leave your home or spend time out of your home from 20:00 until 6:00 unless it is for one of the following reasons:

  • Fulfilling basic needs of daily life.
  • Caring for, looking after or providing help to another person.
  • To avoid a clear and present danger to life or property.
  • For work reasons.
  • For reasons of physical or mental health (e.g. individual sports, going for a walk)
Shops in Austria will need to shut at 7pm. The new rule does not apply to petrol stations, ticket offices at train stations or to airports.

In which situations is the wearing of a face mask covering nose and mouth mandatory?
In public spaces, a minimum distance of one metre must be maintained to all people not living in the same household. The wearing of a face mask covering the nose and mouth is mandatory in the following situations:

  • in (food) shops
  • on the premises of service providers and in all forms of customer contact
  • on public transport and in taxis
  • at indoor and outdoor events
  • in cable cars, funicular railways, coaches and in sightseeing boats
  • in local authority buildings
  • in schools outside the classroom
  • in pharmacies, nursing homes, hospitals and health resorts, and in places where health and care services are provided
  • in locations subject to the Austrian Act on Hygiene at Swimming Pools and Bathing Waters (with the exception of showers and indoor swimming pools)
  • at markets and trade fairs (indoor and outdoor)
--> Please be aware that different rules may apply in different regions and provinces of Austria. These are determined by the Corona Traffic Light System.

The Corona Traffic Light System is a tool developed by the Austrian government to indicate the risk level in the different parts of Austria. Based on the latest epidemiological data, a commission of experts gives each region, each province and Austria as a whole one of the following colours:

  • Red: very high risk. Uncontrolled outbreaks, widespread distribution of the virus.
  • Orange: high risk. Strong accumulation of cases (no longer attributable to individual clusters).
  • Yellow: intermediate risk. Moderate accumulation of cases (attributable to individual clusters).
  • Green: low risk. Individual cases, isolated clusters.

Extract from BBC
Germany is seeking an agreement with EU countries to keep ski resorts closed until early January, in an attempt to curb the spread of coronavirus. Chancellor Angela Merkel told parliament that efforts were being made to reach a Europe-wide decision.

Italy and France have expressed support for a co-ordinated approach. But Austria has voiced concern.

Some of the early European coronavirus hotspots were at ski resorts, helping spread infections across the continent.

Like Germany, Italy has also stressed the need for a united approach on the issue of ski resorts, and Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has already backed delaying the start of the ski season.

"If Italy decided to shut down all its ski lifts without any support from France, Austria and the other countries, then Italian tourists would risk going abroad and taking the contagion back home," he told La7 TV earlier this week.

Many Italians head for the slopes over the Christmas and New Year break and the period is a vital part of the local economy for ski resorts across Europe.

French President Emmanuel Macron has made clear that the country's ski resorts will stay shut until the New Year. Prime Minister Jean Castex said on Thursday he wanted to see the coronavirus rules for ski resorts "harmonised at European level as much as possible".

But Austria has voiced concern over any EU-wide plan for ski resorts, with Finance Minister Gernot Blümel saying that if the EU forced the resorts to remain closed, "then they will have to pay for it". Compensation would run into billions of euros.

Switzerland is not in the European Union and, unlike other Alpine destinations, its ski resorts are already open, so skiers unable to spend their winter breaks in neighbouring countries could head there instead.

The percent GDP from skiing is far higher for Austria and Switzerland than Germany Italy or France.
Risk has to be from chalets, crowded pubs and mainly the big cable cars out from resort.
Personally I’m happy to be in motorhome, take chair lifts and/or langlaufen if at all possible.
I came back 3 weeks early last season.
At 63 not sure how many seasons I have left in me.
As for replies saying I am risking infecting others - I consider returning via motorhome with self contained food and drink to be less risky than staying in UK and going to supermarket.

Austria's ski slopes remain closed, but will be allowed to open on Christmas Eve. Austria is introducing a stricter quarantine regime over the holidays, from 19 December to 10 January. These restrictions will make ski holidays all but impossible for anyone who isn't local. Austrian hotels will stay closed until 7 January. Also anyone arriving from a country with more than 100 coronavirus cases per 100,000 people in the previous two weeks will have to quarantine for 10 days, although an early release is possible if they test negative after five days.

It’s reported that Switzerland, surrounded on almost all sides by countries that have closed their ski slopes for Christmas and New Year, is under intense pressure to do likewise.

Wasn't it a skier to the Austrian resorts who brought the virus back to the UK and was a superspreader?

Mental - can't go to the pub, but folk can't miss their skiing holiday.

It's not the actual skiing that would be a problem as it's solo sport which takes place outdoors, much safer than playing football or rugby which IS allowed in the UK.

It was in Ischgl where the superspreading was mooted as being exported to 45 countries. As said unlikely to be the skiing, but the bars can get a little crowded and a bit lively to say the least. Skiing fine. Bar cramming bad. Simples

Think that's mental too.
It's allowed because the players, coaches & staff are supposed to stay in 'bubbles' - yeah right.
And frequent testing.
As for letting fans back in with only a quick temperature check

But it seems a shame [and selfish] not to be able to wait a few months until vaccination is widespread... and risk kicking it all off again

*accept that skiing itself is solo, [until you need medical], but the accommodation, ski lifts and as above.. apres ski.

SD in a lift line is never going to happen
Love skiing more than motorhomeing and I'm giving this winter a miss
Most of the early German infections were traced back to Ischgl and a particular bar
Uk was suggested to be from an Italian resort
Don't think it really makes a lot of difference it would have got here sooner or later

Amateur games or even kickabouts in the park are allowed in tiers 1 & 2.

The German Rotweiller has announced she's putting the country into lockdown until January 10th. This will annoy a lot of Germans who head south over Christmas and New Year to the Austrian Ski resorts

The FCDO advises against all but essential travel to:

  • the whole of Austria based on the current assessment of COVID-19 risks.
If you are returning to the UK from Austria, you will need to self-isolate on your return (unless you are exempt). Check the latest guidance for England, Broken Link Removed, Scotland and Wales.

Travel may be subject to entry restrictions

  • A landing ban is in place for all flights from the UK to Austria until 10 January.
  • All travellers arriving in Austria from the UK must quarantine for 10 days upon arrival. You have the option of taking a self-funded PCR or antigen test after 5 days. If your result is negative, you will no longer need to stay in quarantine. If you have been in a country other than the UK in the 10 days before you arrive in Austria, depending on the country you may need to self-isolate on arrival or provide a medical certificate showing a negative test result for COVID-19

If you’re returning to the UK from overseas, you will need to:

Mainland Scotland Lockdown until end of January: It is illegal to travel between Scotland and other parts of the UK unless the journey is essential. The Scottish government strongly advises against non-essential foreign travel, and the tougher restrictions mean that non-essential travel into and out of Scotland is prohibited.
