Hi all due to wife working in a school our main holiday is in August. We usually book two weeks on site in France my question is does anybody just wing it in august and just rock up at sites ?

I teach and prefer to holiday first two weeks of July but last year, due to my son’s commitments, we had to holiday the first two weeks of August. We usually go to France, but had to drop Sam in Dortmund on 3rd August and pick him up in Regensburg, on 10th so Germany it was.
I was a little nervous about finding places to stay, not least because it was our first proper holiday in the van. However, we had plenty of options and never struggled ... mainly in Stellplatz but a few campsites too.

In France, I would stay away from seaside locations and larger, holiday camp type sites which could well be full. I know the likes of Domaine de Massereau in Sommieres, gets booked up months in advance.

We have just had our conformation through of our pitch for next july august,we had to book when we left so its been confirmed and will book, having 3 kids preffer to book our 3 weeks

If you have a need for a campsite, e.g. one with kids facilities, you do really need to book, especially in August when the French are all on holiday too.

We only ever book anywhere if we have a need to be at a particular place at a particular time. In over ten years motorhoming all over Europe I can count on the fingers of one foot how often we've failed to find anywhere..................

We have never booked any sites but then we nearly always stay on aires and seldom more than one night in the same place . I think if I wanted to stay in the same place I would get a caravan instead.

If you stay away from the coast there is no need to book campsites. Always worth phoning up but we have never had a problem but we don't need water slides etc. There are many inland sites that have them though.

I suspect you'll be OK, particularly if you stick to the last two weeks in August. They seem to be quieter than the beginning of the month.

When the kids were small we always went to France in August and never booked. Maximum stay was two nights at the same place . Kids insisted on pools etc and we just started looking late afternoon.
Went in August a couple of years ago too, again no problems finding places to stay.

Later half of August is quieter. The kids never go back before the 5th of September unless you’re in Scotland.
