Once it's not fun anymore. As long as I'm able to keep going and I still enjoy it then it's all good. I was on a site last week an elderly couple with a caravan were there for a few days, when they left a car arrived and towed the caravan for them, unable to tow but still enjoying the break.

There is an elderly couple who frequent the CL we love. Couple of years ago their TOAD caught fire, (after some garage work and it was hitched up) he managed to unhitch it but it damaged the rear of their van.
New TOAD & frame and replaced back panel and they’re here again!
I would imagine they are in their 80’s the van is 7 or 7.5 mtr long and he does all the work but she carries the water bottles and she’s bent over and her voice is going.
Nick offered to help them a while back-carry the frame round to the car-but he declined the help. They do it all themselves and they’re certainly not spritely!

I think sadly if your looking for the answer of ‘when should I give up’ then psychologically, you’re not focusing on why you will continue, therefore it’s a fait acompli! 😕

Hi.
Our brief spell as Ass.wardens CMC (Now) The site had a Storage compound and seasonal statics,we would often get phone calls." Can you get our c/van out of storage and pitch it on the touring site ? " Not a problem ( winter time we would light the fire to warm it through). An Airline pilot would ring ,same request,he was off to " Sunnier foreign climes" so out that would come as well. Statics on site ? They had to be moved off for so many days a year,a lot of retired people had stopped touring and bought smaller cars,so their car was not up to the job of towing on the road so,they would ring up and it was transfered......... to be on a touring pitch, then after the so many days, would be.......transfered......... back again. Worked like clockwork.

"No"........... The question was "When would YOU call it a day"....

Not me personally....... as said I don`t want to give up in my mind...

Just curious as to why others would give up...

okay, got you now…. The question is when would/should one pack up…

Simplistically and somewhat binary, it’s when one finds more reasons to not travel than too! Could be lots of factors either compounding or individual which could influence the decision.

The biggest factors for me would not being ‘up for it’ physically and or loss of desire to be ‘on the road’!

If I stopped enjoying it or if one of us was incapacitated. I love the freedom it gives us to get out and about but I don’t love it so much that I would want to do it if I was infirm.

For us it’s a tool to do other things, we like meeting up with other people and staying still sometimes but that’s a small part of it, barring Covid of course when that has been a bonus!

That’s the beauty of a PVC plus bikes, electric now though!

I have called it a day- sold the MotorHome

For me, it stopped being fun,and
  • Health scare in April reminded me of how fragile life is, so didn’t want to spend ANY time not having fun
  • Sick of the traffic
  • Frankly unsustainably high Used prices at present made the decision very easy….selling at the top of the market, if you are not replacing, is good
But I recognise every person is different👍

Don't think I will every lose the enjoyment factor, I don't mind driving long distances but do tend to do shorter daily distances these days on long journeys. My biggest concern is loss of my C1E llicnece and what would I do without it. So far, touch wood medicals have been fine and I remain in good health. Finance is not a concern, I am not keen to down size but don't know what I would do if I had to give up my current motorhome.

We called it a day last week.....

........and what a truly refreshing feeling it is to be van-less.

No more worries about van repairs, warranty claims, dodgy inefficient dealers, poor quality construction, Fiat base vehicle problems, fully booked campsites, finding a wild camp site that doesn't attract joy-boys, horrendous traffic, overseas trips and Covid, councils, height barriers and their parking restrictions, etc etc....

I actually feel free by not having a van.

We don’t intend to give in to anything at the Mo enjoying life to much, sold our van 2 years ago, bought a new Hyundai Tucson, and a 7 year old static caravan with all the comfort and luxury you could want.
Rekindled my enthusiasm for motorbikes again this year at 71 and bought a1976 Triumph Bonneville 750 and a Triumph Thunderbird 900.
Pat my wife as also decided at 71 to resume driving again after not driving for 6 years she picks her new car up on Tuesday next week.
Lifes really good.
Wish similar to all.
John and Pat.

It sounds as if you've cracked it John. I hope we find our ideal set-up soon enough.

All the best,

Andrew

Many a time I think oh to be a hermit in the highlands or deepest wales , with a pvc, but family commits ? I like U.K. but the traffic at certain times is truly horrendous and of course you got the fine British public 😂

Whatever the reason it ends up “when you have to” Mo.
I have in the last couple of years had times when it’s crossed my mind but just had another enjoyable week away and now happy to be home and refreshed and will wash and prepare the van for the next trip.

I'm I weird, but after I've done a trip I enjoy sorting the van out. Guess it's the feeling you have before and after your next vanventure 😊

Like others have said, when it is no longer fun but becomes a chore loading the van, washing the roof and planning where to go. We have just returned from a trip to Scotland, A. Because we couldn't go abroad, B. To give the van a run as it's been idle for much of the last 18 months and C. Just to get out again. Did I enjoy it? Not sure, maybe only because we had our son's 8 month old dog/puppy with us which made us do something. When we can get abroad again with no hassle will be the time we decide if the enjoyment is still there.

Well I've just done two weeks away on a vanventure and I got told that we moved to much and it would been more enjoyable staying in one place for longer from ex girlfriend, errr I mean girlfriend.

I get bored in one place and I do have to admit it's not bad to drive and I enjoy being inside the van when it's cold and wet outside.

Surfings better when its raining though but I just enjoy the change of scenery. At the rate how long am I going to go for is anyones guess but I have no plan on giving up

Isn't that odd. I've just turned 71 and I've just completed my first van build. The 1290 KTM in my garage hasn't turned a wheel for the last year....
