Did anyone else watch that Greg Wallace programs on the Beeb last night.
A factory that makes 2 million cans of soup a day. I may have misheard the pea farmer who said he has 70 square miles of fields devoted to growing peas.

I love watching Greg in action this programme. He makes quite a few bloopers...the poor workers look on in horror. He is such fun to watch. It’s a very interesting programme, well recommended.

His program about the Heinz baked bean factory in Wigan was mighty interesting too. Even had its own sheet metal works making the millions of cans daily.

Great prog. I enjoy seeing the machinery, from the pea harvesters to the high speed canning lines.
I too heard 70 sq. miles and they have only a 2 day window to harvest them when ripe, although I assume they don't all ripen at the same time.
The greater nutritional value of the frozen veg vs fresh was a surprise to me.

I worked in a paint factory as a summer job and apart from making paints and varnishes part of the plant made cans and buckets and so on. Originally just paint cans but they diversified to supply containers to many different industries.

Hi
There used to be a "Pea Experimental ?" Growing area going down the A1 towards the Stamford ? on the left. In the season, where peas were grown, wherever,it was great early mornings,in the dark, there would be loads of machinery with lights on,engines ticking over, just waiting for the right conditions to start harvesting.

Yup, frozen peas are a contradiction in terms - far from being nasty preserved food - they get to the mouth that's eating them a helluva lot fresher than if the cook had bought them in their pods from a greengrocer. It has always been the same - remember beautiful little Patsy Kensit always told us they were fresh as the moment that the pod went pop! didn't she? (Well, she illustrated the word 'pop' anyway ……)

Everest frozen chips, used by thousands of commercial purveyors of cooked food, were exactly the same. Their factory was on site at their enormous potato farm, Swancote area, near Janine's home territory.

Hear is a question when I go to the supermarket it seems it’s only the Heinz bakes beans cans that are regularly dented. Why so?

The only thing fresher would be to grow your own, cook and eat them immediately after harvest :)

One of my favourite meals:

It must be a big saving on transport to make tins on site rather than ship them in empty think of the volume of tins rather than sheet materials.

And to think they used to ship empty aerosol cans from Poland to Spain by road,,,All transport is to cheap.BUSBY.

Always been fascinated by factories and production of everyday things, having spent a life in a non-manufacturing career, so I enjoy 'Inside the factory'. Watched the programme on the Le Creuset plant an evening or two ago but I wish Greg didn't get quite so loud and excitable....

The more cans there are, the more dents will happen. Personally I prefer Aldi Corall beans, just like the old cross and Blackwell ones.
How sad are we talking about beans.
