Just obtained an ASCI card for the first time and was wondering how practical it is to just 'turn up' rather than pre-book on these sites (not at the height of season, obviously). Any advice appreciated.

Hi

I have used their sites quite a lot and not had a problem in May, September & November. This has been mainly in France & Italy. As you indicate July and August may be different.

WE used ours a lot in Spain & France in Sept/Oct and didn't book ahead. We had no trouble and used some lovely sites. I guess it depends where you are going and when.

Have used ACSI sites in Italy and France and never needed to book. I have never travelled in high season. In high season the financial advantages of ACSI are lost so you can use alternative sites without, as it were, paying a premium.

Hi We use ACSI book in Spain all the time except July/August and Spanish b/h and have never prebooked. The only prob in Spain is the sites do get fully booked up over the winter period when the dutch/german/english guys put down roots for the cold spell. Some sites do allow you to prebook but not all. SomeSite owners over here in Spain (especially on the coast) prefer to accept motorhomes for the winter period rather than the odd nighters.
Having said that we normally take our 2 weeks in May/June in Spain / France/Italy and have never had a problem.
Happy camping guys

All the sites we stayed on.. on our Spain trip Jan09/April09.. we used the ACSI Book for ideas for sites and never booked or even rang ahead we just turned up and we managed to get a pitch..obviously on the way to Spain through France not a lot of sites were open so we used the aires... once in Spain the ACSI book came out and we had no probs at all
Returning back through France right at the start of the season (April) no worries we just turned up and got a pitch..in fact on two of the sites...1 near Narbonne a Dutch run site.. and 1 at Issoure a French owned site there was only us and another couple of vans there.. so we could pick the best pitches!!
however what is not stated in the ACSI book is the need on some French sites to pay the tourist tax on top of the ACSI fee!!

The whole point is to get punters when they are quiet. No discount in peak season, which you'll see is quite short.

But Camping Butterfly on Garda bucks the trend, it does fill up in off peak season and quite rightly so. Not a disaster in that area, loads of campsites.
