I hope i'm in the right category.....Hi, i'm going to gut this old trailer, but wanted to know if anyone knew if it contained any asbestos? the insulation in the walls looks like 2" white batten, the roof around the vent leaked, and the insulation was broken apart....thats where I stopped. I also heard that 9" floor tiles could also contain. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanx for your time, K.K.

Here is a picture of the bute!

Floor tiles of a certain age can contain asbestos so take care if removing them. If you are unsure stop and get it tested, Normally the softer the material the more dangerous it is. The fibres are more contained in more ridged material .

Get the materials tested by a UKAS accredited asbestos testing laboratory.
Floor tiles (if positive for asbestos) are a low risk to health but need disposal as asbestos waste.
Other more hazardous asbestos materials may be present.

Maybe I`m missing something but why would you want to renovate that caravan ?
I`m all for keeping things from the past in use, but that looks a mamouth task to bring back to life.
Is it thought of as a "classic" ?

Floor Tiles made before 1999/2000 are most likely to contain asbestos. The 2" White batten could be anything. Photos would help.

have you considered that it may cost you 3 times as much to rebuild this to a market std as it would to purchase a good used van.

This is a better link to a UKAS Laboratory

<Broken link removed>

Welcome to the forum by the way

I love reading the funny comments about the ol turd burgler... it was a free trailer, however its not going to be worth my life over.... im very sorry to hear about your Father. This is why im asking these questions.... thx?

IF. it contains asbestos. Legal removal and disposal. Is a VERY expensive operation. To be honest I would walk away from this.

It is likely to be LEGAL to remove it yourself if you own the 'asbestos' and are not a contractor. Most areas have a licensed disposal site where you can take it for disposal at a cost. Some tips have a specific container but you need to speak to them first as to what precautions are required (usually double bagged)

It looks as if the op is in Canada which may have different rules and laws, but as stated can't see why you would want to.

Hadn't noticed that !

Ignore links to UKAS.

Canada is very relaxed about asbestos since they mine most of it, even to present day I believe.

Good luck with the refurb (y)

Surely it is the 'project' that is important ? Something like this is not taken on for monetary gain, but the love of doing it :)

Good luck with the project Kaner2222 .. Keep us updated with how you get on :-)

I read that as dismantle, not renovate.
No mention of renovating.

He says he's planning to gut it.
I took that as renovate it for use but maybe not ???

What a wreck. Certainly not worth bothering with, but I suspect he intends to make something from the chassis/running gear otherwise I'd expect to be paid handsomely to gut/dispose of it.
Strange that someone in Canada is asking that on a largely European oriented message board.

You can still buy sheet asbestos in Canada as far as I know. It's a versatile material and quite safe if handled correctly.

Are you sales director for the Canadian Chrysotile mining company by any chance ?

Would you want it in your house ?
In many ways you are correct in what you say but in the real world ensuring it's handled correctly is nigh on impossible.
There's always a clown with a lump hammer ready to smash a hole in it to enable the job he's doing.
Your argument though is exactly that of the Canadian producers.

I worked on steam plant built in the 50's and 60's, asbestos was the insulating material and was excellent. But, as you say, there are idiots out there.

In my last job we had a building where the ceiling tiles contained asbestos, our Health and Safety Rep. discovered this and demanded it be removed. After extensive testing and two surveys I put it to our senior management that they had a choice, leave it in situ, where it was doing no harm, or demolish and rebuild. Needless to say it remained. That was some 20 years ago, the building has since been demolished and the asbestos content took three weeks to remove.

Please be careful, lost my dad to Asbestosis, it is not something to mess with.
Me too  used to tell me stories that as a young man he would clean out huge drums and the at lunch time would sit in the dust to eat his baggin.

Some years ago Woman and I did a nostalgia trip of our old home town, Barking
The town it's self was barely recognisable, but we then went on to visit houses we had lived in and lastly schools we had attended
All went well to start with, though a couple of the schools had been 're-purposed'
Last on the list was my high school, South East Essex Technical High.
Gone !!! Built in the early 60's with a main block, three ( or was it four ) story science block, tech block divided in to two, half for woodwork and the other half for metal work and two 'house blocks which were divided into two 'houses', it was riddled with asbestos so torn down..
The site had a big notice on the substantial fence warning folk to stay out as the ground was contaminated
It has now been redeveloped and is the Rodene Residents centre I believe

I have been told that Canada then sends it over to India where labour and life is cheap and H&S is none existent to work the sheets

It can be used safely if the correct procedures are used, however, in most countries it was simpler and easier just to invoke a ban .

I suppose there was a clue to the Canadian link in the use of the word "trailer". I expected to see our idea of a trailer from the heading.
