Hi Folks,
I'm going on a cycle trip at the end of next week for two days in Argyll.
Loch Lomond/Tarbet/RABT/Strachur/Otter Ferry/Tarbert/Lochgilphead/Kilmartin/Arduaine - Day One
Arduaine/Kilmartin/Dalavich/Cladich/Inverary/Arrochar - Day Two

The question is:
Are the little beggers out yet....or expected any time soon...
They'll love sweaty cyclists!
I've been sat in a rally car with my crash helmet on in a service area in the past to get away from them....

Cheers
Bill

Yes they are out n about but playing hide n seek. Garlic and alcohol seems to keep them away along with the usual remedies.

Thanks Irnbru - alcohol not really an option cycling 100 miles followed by 65 miles
I recall some Avon Lotion or similar was recommended. I'm Scottish but have never been able to escape them yet. They tend not to bite on the East Coast where I'm from - but in Argyll...... Deadly!!

More than toes wet now!
Yip, been around for 4-5 weeks now in Glasgow area.:(
One or two nibbles this morning (06.30ish!) when oot wi the dug.
So, if like that in Glasgow, would suggest a biohazard suit for Argyll!(y)

We were in the area a couple of weeks ago at Cabin in Dalvich also Kilmartin and Arduaine, there were a few but not too bad, the weather was lovely so think sun keeps them away but 2 weeks can make a difference.

Smidge and marmite. The little buggers hate it so marmite on toast for breakfast every day and liberal amounts of smidge

Whatever you do, you'd never be able to combat against this sort of thing. Could really spoil the day, so be prepared.

I spent a lot of time in Scotland in the Braemar/Ballater area in the summer and we used to use Avon 'Skin so Soft'. Worked most of the time but you still got the occasional bite however it was much better than other products actually marketed as repellents.
regards
Nik.

Guess who's signed up for a 5 day outdoor activity course on the Argyll coast in July, living in tents?

Bought some insect repellent only today, but can't help thinking

Yes, they are out in full force. We are just outside Dunoon, going to cross over on the ferry from Hunters Quay tomorrow. We have had the little bliters in Oban for the last four days and now they are even worse down here tonight.

midges once endured at their worst are something you never want to repeat o_Oo_O
I'm even safer from midges and the fishy one. I'm just outside Geneva. Is that far enough from her?

Thanks Mike - trouble is I'll still have to stop and wait for the others to catch up:sneaky:
Some Yorkshire lass called Lizzie Deignan (Armitstead) is going to be riding with us so maybe I'll try and keep up with her. I think she must have slowed down as she's no longer World Champion :(
