It’s popped up a few times on here that a few of us are UKGSer‘s so I thought I’d ask the question:

Are you on UKGSer and, if so, what’s your username?

Pops 1 , Crazylegs , Howard H

I’ll start with a confirmation that I am, with the same username.

Been on it since 2002, but it's so bad these days I'm embarrassed to admit to it.

Haven't posted anything for over a year or more, but log on now and again for the 'entertainment' value.

Well worth it, some excellent information if you do a search, a lot like on here for that, together with some very talented people for those technical bits, again like on here. Certainly nowhere near busy like Funsters, you could wait days for an answer. I’ll remain with it all the time I have a GS.

Was on it till 2007 then bought a GT1200 and then a GT1300 lets just say ,reliability, customer service and warranty claims were, 1. Appalling, mediocre and finally too numerous to mention! Never again,

Funny how we can have different experiences, I’ve had six BMW’s, a 1991 R80RT did thousands of miles touring UK, a 1995 R850, a 1996 R1100RT that went all over europe two up on a couple of occasions, a 2006 1200GS, a 2008 1200GS and my current 2011 GS owned since 2011 and the only issue a I’ve had was the ignition sensor ring on the 2006 GS that was fixed under warranty.
I do do all my all services though.

Me too I have had R80's R90's RT1100, RT1150 GS1100 GS 1200's and all no problems like you all over Europe the GT's were dire and most of the problems were due to cost cutting with the wiring harness too small breaking or shorting out or the rear bevel drive bearing collapsing , centre stand collapsing fuel pump packing up, We never even made the ferry for France as the hassock fork bearing and front wheel bearing went in Hampshire, contacted BMW assist and asked where I was. Looked on the sat nav and realised I was about 400 yards from Barnstormers in Alton so don't send the truck I can get there under my own wobbly steam. Got to the dealership no parts in stock but would get them expressed for tomorrow, meanwhile find a hotel etc BMW assist will sort it out, Eventually found a hotel for £200 a night as everything else was fully booked. Missed ferry and connection told that the only available place was in four days time so we missed holiday ferry etc and were out of pocket, put the claim in and were refused payment as a mechanic had not attended the breakdown so we were not covered, despite numerous letter they would not budge!. Second time off to Newcastle to catch ferry to Norway. Bike would not start in the morning so having been burnt once we contacted BMW assist who sent out a *mechanic* from Coopers, said mechanic took off fairing and tank and broke all the connectors, missed ferry and waited 6 hrs for replacement vehicle to get home. Quite happy with a Fiesta or similar, no they had gone all round the north of England to get an M5 BMW . The bike even broke down when I picked it up new from Alan Jeffries on the way home with sensor issues! I have a friend who uses one for everyday use as his training bike and has done over 120,000 miles on it without one problem so I guess like most manufactured things there are Monday morning/Friday afternoon BM's

My old 1150 hasn't been to a dealer since 2003,one of the beauties is that it can be serviced with a knife and fork ?.

It just keeps going.

Gstom on UKGSer.

The venerable 1150.

Ian

I've told the tale before, when we camped at Monza 12 years ago we got chatting to an Australian who had taken a year off and had ridden from Oz. I'm sure it was a carb 1050 chosen for ease of keeping it running anywhere in the world.

From Monza he was riding to UK to meet up with girlfriend on her bike and they were then going to ride home via Russia, Mongolia.

Hell of a trip.

Has the GS lost the plot since then ? Imagine trying to fix one in Mongolia.

Nope the gs hasn’t lost the plot, for the majority of owners it’s a superb bike that does the job.
Are BMW too bothered about one that might break down in Mongolia.....probably not.

Clearly less bothered than KTM were back when Ewan & Charlie were looking for support! ?

Pops without the 1 after it.
Mine is the red one above on a recent trip around the NC500.

I have a friend, Nathan Millward, rode Australia to UK on a postie bike (essentially a Honda moped) but he chooses to ride around Europe on machine more appropriate , BMW, Guzzi,............er, Royal Enfield Himalayan.?

Hi, member as Scottie since 2005. Gs now moved on, but still got a few smaller bikes in the garage.

Don’t miss the weight of the bike but miss the longer trips, specially an annual meet with mates like John “Jaws” to Rovereto near Lake Garda.

The site is still busy but has got a little too political.

Crossyrt. Been a member for years, different bikes though. Great forum and some useful information to be gained. Similar to funsters for sure.
