We had a five minute view of this think it's a young kestrel
A few years back it allowed me to take this picture of it less then 10 ' away
indoors shot though double glazing door

As to your fella not a clue mr @old-mo

That is definitely not a kestrel and I am not certain that it is a sparrowhawk either. To be more certain we need an idea of its size. If it was as big as a buzzard, it could be a Goshawk. The obvious white 'trousers' suggest this, as does the shape of the head. If that is what you have seen, you are very lucky. Where was it in the country?

I'd go along with goshawk. White stripe over the eye; shorter wings; barred tail; and, as @JeanLuc says, the white undertail.

Could be a merlin. Perched on a lowish fence and swoops along the ground to get small animal prey.

Not a Merlin I'm afraid. It is definitely a hawk (accipiter) and the most common would be a female Sparrowhawk but the white trousers are more indicative of a Goshawk (which is generally bigger, although some female Sparrowhawks can be as large as a male Goshawk).

From your photo we don't have the size of the bird, which would help, but you can see by comparing with the following that the wings are more the length of the goshawk than the merlin. The colour of the plumage on the back is also quite different, as is the beak.

I'm trying to take the scale from the top board of the fence which makes it look quite small to me.
Difficult one. It looks just like the occasional visitor that we get to our garden wall which is about the size of a kestrel and a smaller than male or femal sparrowhawks.

Nice shot, a first summer male I think. The barring on the tail is distinctive, on adults it is much finer.
I only know this because I've just checked on a book. :)

OK, at that size it is definitely not a Goshawk. Definitely not a falcon (kestrel, merlin etc) as they have black eyes. Hawks have a yellow ring. Most likely is an immature male Sparrowhawk.

Well spotted JeanLuc, I didn't notice the eyes!
