Daisy our 12 month old golden retriever puppy has stared her first season. She is the first bitch we have had as all our others have been males.

She has a pair of doggie knickers with a lining pad for indoors which works well.

She is cleaning up after herself etc but is desperate to run and exercise etc. We have been taking her out and keeping her on a lead and trying to avoid other dogs.

When other dogs approach and look ”interested”, we advise the owner that she is in season and most fully understand and take their dogs away.

However, yesterday whilst walking along the beach ( dog friendly..) a large lab came charging over and was intent on having his wicked way with Daisy. I grabbed his collar and held him away and advised the owner about Daisy being in season… well it all went off then…she stared shouting how stupid and irresponsible we were, I quote “the stupid bitch should be kept indoors”.

Now our view is that there is no way it is fair to confine Daisy for 3 weeks without getting out for walks etc. We are taking as many precautions as we can, but are we right or wrong?

The one downside to having a dog is having to deal with other dog owners who don’t seem to have any consideration.

It’s probably a good idea to walk her where not many others will be while she’s in season but nothing wrong with your actions, we have two dogs and do our best to avoid others unless we know them whilst out walking saves any hassle

I would suggest more outdoor exercise this month not less. Oh and carry a big stick for buffoon bashing.

We had a black lab bitch that was hardly ever on the lead, and our garden wasn't fenced, we kept getting a dog visit and Janie took it to the police station, one day the owner can round ranting and raving about us not having a fence to keep his dog out. Bob.

I think you know it wasn't you at fault but any confrontation like that can make us doubt ourselves. The other owner should have been able to control her own dog.

She is a little lovely little dog and we are so pleased with her. She misses her big brother Indy though..

The cake was turkey mince, vegatables and mash..... didn't last very long

Our canine friends have always been bitches (in the nicest sense of the word) although the rescues have always been spayed.

You are doing exactly the right thing - Daisy does still need exercise and you are taking all the precautions you can. I doubt the other owner would want to pay the vet's fees for sorting out a "mishap".

Maybe the other owner should keep their dog on a lead, most dogs if not all should be kept on a lead when walking as they will disturb / hunt / kill ground nesting birds and other wild life. A dog is an animal however domesticated will revert to seeking out wildlife.

She was so desperate to be able to have a good run and we were able to rent the dog paddock/run at Quex Park. She had it all to herself and happily chased her ball and did alI the agility pieces for an hour.

Happy and tired little lady…… Cost us £15 for the hour but hey ho.
