I'd say that's optimistic tbh
Depends on what it's pulling
If it's a 3500 mh I'd expect 30-35 mpg travelling at 60-65 mph

So you could possibly have a max weight of upto 3500 kg
I'd say driven carefully with the speeds I mentioned you could get mid to late thirties

Yes, if it's measured downhill with a following wind...;)

I'd be surprised at 'well over 40mph' in normal driving.

Duncan was talking about the Peugeot/citroen 2 litre adblue engine, is that what you have Mike?

No I don't. Euro 5+ Ducato 2.3 litre 130hp, 3,500kg. And I struggle to get 30mph.

But afraid I'd still be very surprised at 'well over 40mpg'.

This is what I get out of my Wildax at 3500kg - only done 4kmiles so might improve a bit.
On the Wildax website Duncan says some of his customers are getting well over 40mph, with a 6 metre 3500kg van.
Pretty sure Duncan has said similar for years :rofl:.

This is actually what is on the website currently for the Aurora;
"...The Citroen Relay is now offerred [sic] with the all new Euro 6 engine. This new Relay is upgraded in many ways from the previous model with increased fuel efficiency. Figures provided by Citroen show a combined MPG in excess of 46!..."
and from the printed brochure;
"...The Citroen Relay gives great power and very low emissions
with the new Euro 6 engine. Running costs are low with one of
the best fuel economy figures on the market, with figures
quoted in excess of 45 mpg..
."
From the Citroen Relay brochure;
ECONOMY Litres/100km (mpg)
Combined Min/Max 6.0/6.6 (47.1/42.8)

So not a "in the real world" figure.

Our previous van was a 2010 Euro 4 Ducato, with exactly the same engine size, output and weight as above. But it was a coachbuilt rather than pvc, so much less aerodynamic.

Fiat claimed, at the time, that the then new Euro 5 engine was much more fuel efficient than the Euro 4.

Personally, I haven't seen that. I get perhaps 1mpg better in the newer van, but put it down to improved aerodynamics.

I'm perfectly satisfied with the mileage I get, but just think suggesting 46 mpg for the new 2 litre engine Is a bit naughty and perhaps misleading to potential buyers. But hey, I might be quite wrong, and it can actually achieve that sort of mileage in real world driving? Though, as said, I'd be very surprised...

I think the adblue engine is more fuel efficient than the Fiat offering because of the nature of the SCR engine which is better than the Fiat EGR offering consumption wise.

My 10 year old 2.3L in a 5.4m van generally gets 34mpg. Most of this is motorway miles at 65-70mph. I do notice that in nice long sections through roadworks at 50mph, the average mpg slowly ticks up. If you want good mileage you need to cruise at HGV speeds.

Last year going around the Highlands over a 100 mile stretch I managed 40mpg average! There was very little traffic so was going really slow, just enjoying the scenery. I was deliberately avoiding using the brakes and just coasting into bends and being very gentle on the throttle. The manufacturer's claims can be achieved.

I don't disagree with that. I've got a 2 litre Jag that uses adblue, and the mpg is reasonably impressive.

But still a little doubtful about 46 mpg for the Peugeot 2 litre pulling 3,500kg.

Coming up to 10k on Elldis 135 with Peugeot 2ltr. I had a ducato based auto trail prior to this. I think the design of the MH dictates mpg. Yhe auto trail was like pushing a chunk of cheese through thick custard. The 2ltr feels more like it has more grunt but the accordo is more aerodynamic. Mine is a 17plate and I have already used a tank of adblue and some! It is definitely more economic on local and motorway usage.

On asking the mechanic at a garage “ was it correct that the vehicle we where thinking of buying did 80+ mpg”. The rather quick reply was “ ya once, and that was with everything out including the spare” :LOL:

I think any quoted figures can realistically expect to have 25% taken off them back in the real world - where we don't all drive in hermetically sealed laboratory-built wind tunnels :)

Over the last two tanks we have averaged, 36.8 according to the trip computer, 37.1 doing the maths from receipts and the odometer!
Not bad I think for a van that hasn’t yet done 3000 miles in total, when run in a bit more I would expect that to go up 1-2 mpg.
Pretty damn good for a 2L lump pulling a motorhome.

At 50mph (2000RPM) over 150 miles on the M1, I my counter read 40.5 MPG last week. Best ever! - Speed does cost.

All "official" fuel consumption figures are way too optimistic, even for an empty van ... bit like the "official" Volkswagen emissions figures(!) I'm currently getting 38mpg on a run (checked brim to brim) shown as 37mpg on the trip computer, and that is better than I expected. PVC on new (2018) Peugeot Boxer L4H2 with Peugeot 2.0 130hp HDi engine cruising at 55-60mph indicated.

I've had my Euro6 Boxer for a year now and done 8k miles. The mpg varies enormously depending on
  • van speed
  • windspeed
  • hills
On a *flat* motorway with a following wind, doing no more than 56 mph (90 kph) I can get 45 mpg +
It drops considerbaly if I go 60 mph+ so I hardly ever do. Wind resistance is proportional to speed cubed and with a van there's a lot of wind to push out of the way.
Hills make a big difference too; if I drive through hilly Cornwall and Devon on the A30, still at <56 mph, I only get 37 mpg.
On a 60 mile drive down from 1000m high in central Spain to the coast, I got 55 mpg!
Overall on average I'm getting about 37, that's including some big climbs in France and Spain.

I have an Elddis Encore with the 2.0 litre Ad-blue engine. I've done 4000 miles from new and am getting an indicated 30-32 mpg. 28 mpg if towing. Not sure how accurate the display is though. Might be worth checking the mpg the old-fashioned way sometime (brim the tank and record the mileage etc.).

Theoretical figures derived in laboratory tests.
Read the small print in the advertising blurb.

Nothing like true road conditions over thousands of miles.

My car is quoted by Hyundai as capable of 70mpg.....in two years the fuel computer has NEVER shown better than 42.8mpg combined driving.
