I am aware of the food regs But I wondered if the border people are actually checking inside motor homes for food. Any experiences would be useful please

asking for a friend

A lot of funsters who are currently abroad said they had no checks on food. I think they are busy enough with the covid tests. So don't worry I'm not I'm taking over lots of food in 2 weeks.

It must be nice when you can pick and choose which rules apply to you :)
I don't know about picking and choosing which rules "apply to me" but I only obey the rules which make obvious sense to me.

For goodness sake...

...have you seen who makes some of the rules?

I like to think that rules are made to be observed by fools and are for the guidance of wise men

We have rules for a reason. They keep us safe. You would not get onto a flight if you knew that the pilot was going ignore the aviation air rules during takeoff or landing. However, what if something happens, something that is not in the rule book? Or what happens if someone else breaks the rules?

Harry Day, the Royal Flying Corps First World War fighter ace, remarked that “rules are for the obeyance of fools, and the guidance of wise men”. While this quote is now dated and should refer to both men and women, there is a lot that Harry Day can teach you. Harry Day was captured by the Germans in WW2 and repeated helped others to escape and many times attempted to escape himself. He finally escaped, stealing a VW car and driving it to Allied lines. Harry continually fought against the rules set against him, and in doing so, he saved many lives

Those rules would fall into my category of obviously making sense.

Not bringing a packet of bacon and half a pound of Sainsburys economy sausages in my fridge across a border because the "rules" say I can't, fall into the category... "sod off you bureaucratic, suit wearing, pension seeking civil service slave."

and NO... you can't have a bite of my sausage sandwich.

It's just been on the wireless, no more Fray Bentos pies to be exported or smuggled to Portugal. To be fair it should be a criminal offence even to in possession of one in any country...

what if something happens,
Hi.
During some foods not being allowed into France due to "Mad cow/fowl pest/foot and mouth ? .Some of it was Cheese-Ham etc.,regular sandwich fillers,as you drove off the ferry/train,there were dustbins in the lorry lanes at the start where you could chuck your banjo's in while you drove by.If i had breakfasted at home, banjo's would do me until i parked up that night,so i just drove by. If you feel LUCKY do it,but we aren't talking a few sandwiches here are we? we are talking about a Fridge full of stuff.
What you have to think is," Can i afford to lose this stuff ? "....Yes.?... Those foreign Lorries have boxes strapped on the sides of their trailers, with enough food in to see them through a weeks journey,so if you see them being pulled in and you have a fridge full oooops...... Its not the cost, its the delay that may ensue..So that question again..." Can you afford the time ? "
Best of luck, guess your minds made up,but thats my two'penneth.

Is there not a whole buisness earning lots of money interpreting rules to suit their customers, called the legal system.

I think the French border control are more interested in checking batch numbers on vaccine certificates at the moment:rolleyes:

Agree but the only thing that has changed is our political status with the EU it's a silly rule that bans food for personal consumption.
We had it before when it was the ECC but they allowed you to take food in for personal consumption.

What's the betting that there will be a whole series of complaints when French Customs start enforcing the EU rules. I can image the Daily Fail picture of a couple of miserable motorhomers looking peed off when their fridges and cupboards are emptied and they are handed some form of fine.....

Don't try driving a van interstate from Perth Western Australia to Alice Springs with forbidden fruit on board, we were on a track hundreds of miles from anywhere and at the unmarked inter state we were stopped by a guy from a parked customs lorry!! He was very thorough in his checking! We were okay as we had been warned at the start of the journey! Another time we were booking in for our flight from Darwin back to Perth, sniffer dog blocked my wife, handler wanted to know if she had got any apples in her bag! We had eaten them before we got to the airport, but the dog picked up the smell in the correct bag , found that very interesting! Some of these rules are for very good reasons , but stuff going back to where it originally came from!!

We travelled via tunnel yesterday. We did purchase some meat and dairy products but were willing to let them go if challenged.

In our freezer compartment we 3 chicken breasts, 1/2 kg Mince meat, 2 pork chops, 3 chilli burgers. Fridge contained 1 pint milk, cheese and 1 packet of ham.

We were pulled in by customs who checked that our has cylinders were turned off and sent on our way. We were not asked about fridge or freezer contents

On speaking with someone here on site who is resident and has travelled to and fro a few times, it appears that they were checking quite regularly in intial weeks, but that has lapsed somewhat.

Hope this helps!

If any of you get fined, please come back on here and moan about the bloody forriners persecuting the Brits.

No check at Santander, took our temperature and stamped our passport, no check Uk side

You have to weigh up the risk and reward. But consider, It is often more than confiscation that you risk. and while you won't get locked up for a few Lincolnshire sausages, they can be awkward and keep you hours at the port while interviews are done and reports made. They won't care that your ship is sailing or train departing. All for something you can buy at the port within a mile from the docks.

We are going through the tunnel on Friday night will let you know how we get on.
