I’m thinking of writing a smartphone app for motorhoming and would welcome your input as to whether it would be a) useful b) worth buying.

The App would be principally for managing the weight and inventory for your MoHo as well as providing a log for MoHo details.

It would allow you to:
  • Enter the dimensions, weight, payload, capacities etc
  • Enter the inventory items along with weight and whether it is onboard or not (along with location if onboard)
  • Calculate estimated weight based on measured and entered empty weight along with weight of selected inventory onboard
  • Log important info such as insurance details / policy numbers / expiry dates etc
  • Log servicing info - such as vehicle servicing, hab servicing, component servicing - with alerts of due items
  • Log trips, locations, good sites etc
  • Reminder list for trips - e.g. “remember to charge batteries 5 days in advance”
  • “Pre-flight” Check list - e.g. Gas off, cupboards latched, garage doors latched, mains cable disconnected.... etc
In summary it would be your MoHo companion.

Now I know there are apps that do something similar but I haven’t seen one that covers weights/payload estimator etc.

Any thoughts on whether that would be useful, and would you pay a few pounds for it?

I’m not trying to be a millionaire here, just want to make something that would be useful to me as well as others and why not if I make some beer tokens in the process!

I wish you well with your idea.

I am sure some folk will find it helpful.

My only worry is that Apps are usually free... I haven't ever paid for an app.

I guess you might try seeking sponsors who would like their company or product to be on your app.

Good luck.

I wouldn't use it as I know the weight, payload etc
Insurance numbers are logged in the phone, it maybe a good idea for some but I think it's inventing something that doesn't need inventing

Good point re Free apps - but for the most part they are riddled with intrusive adverts that do a good job of pi$$ing me off at an important moment (and I’m sure I’m not alone with that).

That’s why just about all of them have an “Ads Free” flavour that means you need to purchase it for a few £s.

I have also thought about the sponsored method and will investigate that if / when I proceed with the build.

The best App I hav e seen is RV Companion (which I use all the time for logging trips). It does have inventory etc but not any individual weight monitoring capability.

Maybe it's just me but I would find having to make a complete list of everything with weights a bit of a pain ion the proverbial.

If you can write smartphone apps why not also ask for suggestions from others on this site for ideas - bet there would be some good ones?

a motorhome friendly fuel log with mpg calculator per trip and overall would be good

Not for me,sorry.

we have a paper version in the motorhome fun log book
Ditto and the big plus is The Boss loves it and it keeps her busy/quiet at various times on our travels.

Thanks for comment so far.

Of course it is aimed at more of the novices rather than the very experienced and wise sages that are on here!

P.s. to avoid any doubt, the comment above is not in any way meant to be sarcastic.

I have learned so much from the contributors on this forum. ?

I can see it being useful to a lot of people, especially the payload part.
Being techie I don't have a problem keeping track of everything.

Subscribers  do not see these advertisements

Wish you luck but I suspect in the wider motorhome community a significant number don't care enough about payload to even look let alone learn.

Not to hijack the original post but have a look at 'Road Trip HD'

I have been using it for my F150 since December 2016
Plus I have set up my travel trailer on it as a separate vehicle for LPG usage, filled with £10.65 in June and still most of it left...

It gives a total average MPG plus a trip MPG
You just enter a starting odometer reading when you set things up and then an updated one each entry along with fuel price & qty.

Mine currently shows 14,886 miles travelled @ an average of 14.67 MPG
an average of £0.336 per mile
an average of £1.184 per litre
using 4,670 Litres
costing me a total of £5,526.69 ( Maybe I shouldn't look at that bit...)
