I'm 74 years old , had a Well man booklet out of the Daily Mail, few weeks ago, stated in booklet anybody over 70 years old can have a Ultra Scan on Aortic Artery, So when I went to Doctors for something else , asked Doctor about this she replied " haven't you had it done". She gave me a Telephone Number to Self Referral . Phoned up for appointment , none available until next year.

Important Part I asked why I had not been notified , the Hospital Booking Lady said , the scheme has only been running a few years , you must have been 70 years old before scheme started , and we don't go back to check if anybody was 70 or older before scheme started !! I am getting done if the Artery bursts it's a good chance you are a Goner.

Had mine done at 65. Pleased to hear exactly as it should be, asked when's the next one due ? Every 65 years she said.
That'll make you 90 then when I come back, will you still be nursing then ! I said !

this is something I worry about, as it's what killed my father. he felt unwell early one morning, so went downstairs for a drink. he sat in his chair and when mum came downstairs half an hour later he was dead

When I had mine done they let me look at it on the screen. Just a straight line, not very impressive but healthy!

I had a letter about it when 65,had it done, all clear.
I wonder if it’s one of those great NHS cock-ups where it depends on where you live,I do hope not.
I’ve only ever known of one person whose death was directly attributable to a dodgy aorta.............but I’ve known dozens whose death was due to prostate cancer...................why don’t they call all us chaps in for a check on that???????
Money?
Just a thought.

Than you for the posting, I had no idea that I should self refer and that my age group (68) seem to have been over looked. I have left a message and now awaiting a call back.

I knew a young woman who died when she was in her 30's, don't know why women don't have it done.

prostate cancer is not a quick killer though. dad had prostate cancer for a few years before the aortic abruption killed him. the coroner says it was like a hose suddenly ripping of the pump (heart) so a very quick death

Why is it only for men? Is the physiology different?
I’ll ask carolyn :)
My mother had a pain in her leg , eventually got it investigated , found had aortic aneurysm , pressing on nerve was booked in for surgery , heart was restarted twice , and fitted with pacemaker , that was 10years ago , still going well :)

It would ....... or rather it picked up on mine. I was early 60’s when it was randomly found via a CT scan. Mine was huge and was took 9 months to get the correct stent made up and surgery to be planned. Fortunately I’m still here 3 years on. Turns out mine was likely genetic. It’s a serious condition so don’t miss out on the check if you’re offered it!!!

I think 65 is the first time you’ll get formally invited to attend as it’s then or after that AA’s tend to appear. Mine wasn’t normal so was found earlier, as I mentioned after another random set of circumstances led to a check up.

The risk of AAA is 4-6 times higher in men than women. The actual incidence is not that high so it is not cost effective to screen women as the actual risks are low.

There is a rare genetic sort so if you have a young relative who had one or a female relative who had one then it’s well worth mentioning it to your GP.

If your CT scan was of your abdomen it would show an abdominal aortic aneurysm and that is the one that is picked up on screening but if your CT scan was only of your chest then they may not have gone far enough down to pick up an AAA but they would have picked up a thorasic aortic aneurysm but you really don’t want one of those.

That was mine ?. Through into the thorax and continuing down in the abdomen. I was really lucky. Prior to surgery I was told ..... if it goes you’ve got a max of 20mins ..... I live over an hour away from the hospital ?. It wasn’t a great time.

I had mine checked just 2 days after my 65th birthday a few years ago. Got a letter from the Health Authority, booked appointment for just a few days later. Went into the local hospital, spent half an hour listening to all the warnings, the ultrasound took 5 minutes.
