Just really after some advice about whether it’s worth a couple of forays over the German border? I fancied a few days in the lakes around Salzburg or some trips into Czech Republic to Mariánské Lázně, Karlovy Vary and Český Krumlov. But I’m put off by the toll boxes. Is it best just to stay away or is it worth the hassle? I have a feeling Austria might be easier than the Czech Republic, although typically that makes more sense, geographically!

We went to the Czech Republic a couple of years ago the toll box system works really well, if you have a look online before you set off you will find where your first Premid toll box retailer is to pick up a box, taking out the box is pretty easy they have a system of a book with translated phrases and you just point to what you want to say pre-charge the box from your credit card and then when you leave give it back and get the refund that will go back onto your card rather than paying in cash and then getting cashback which you can’t spend.

When you take out your box ask for a map and then you will find the coordinate references for your last station to give it back might be worth last but one and then get off the motorway just in case there’s a problem.

PS Cesky Krumlov is lovely and there is an Aire at the tourist bus stop off point when we were there there was no water or dump but you could dump at the bus station a little down the road, we also stayed At lake Lipno which is a lovely spot to relax.

Been through Austria several times without using the Autobahn. I set the sat nav so "Period tolls" are off but leave "Pay per Use " tolls on, that is because once it wanted us to do a 150 mile detour as there was a tunnel on our route with a small toll.

Lenny HB which sat nav is that? I’ve never come across those options on a sat nav before?

IGO Prima, runs on my Clarion stereo, Pioneer also use it as do a lot of Chinese satnavs.

We did Poland and the Czech Republic in 2016, although our van is 3:5 our friends where in their Concorde which I think is around 6 ton. They had no issues getting the box and dropping it off and were surprised how cheap it was.
