Petrol companies. Duty is the same on both fuels. Diesel became more expensive here when people started buying diesel cars. What pisses me off is that derv has been up to ten pence a ltr more that petrol for what is a dirty unrefined fuel so how come it's so close now, who's buggering about? Petrol companies or government?

Simply supply and demand......... There has been a shortage of refined diesel (it is neither dirty nor unrefined, but a blend of components with additives the same way as gasoline is blended) due to very high demand in China and other Asian countries, meaning that the traders can sell for more profit over there, causing an arbitrage in pricing. With the slow down in China and India that arbitrage has narrowed and combined with what is effectively a glut of fuel in USA the refinery price difference here in Europe has narrowed as well. Add in to that the fact that diesel and gasoline are taxed the same here in UK and there is the explanation
You should read Marc Rich's biography - he is the guy that invented oil trading! A very interesting read and a controversial pardon by Bill Clinton when he left officeThat's something I've always said should have been banned years ago. Selling the fuel once it has been loaded aboard ship. parking up ships in Torquay bay waiting for price to adjust to their favour.
As far as I 'm concerned once it has been purchased it should be delivered & that's it. No multiple selling on.
There should have been a complete ban on anything going to the Chinese/indians , etc; until they use modern products & stop polluting.
It cost everyone else billions to change refrigeration gases & then we allow the ¡3rd' world countries, Chin, India, etc; to continue using them & additionally selling the recovered banned refrigerants to them as well ! Utter nonsense.
All just worked out in a way to make the scum more profits at the expense of those poor saps footing the bill.![]()
