Hi you all,

In May we bought ourselves a nice Camper !! Its a Fiat Ducati built 1991/2. Did quite some campering with it: went to Scandinavia, Paris and in september to France and northern Spain.
Had a great time. :thumb:

Everywhere we went we have asked people whether they knew what the thing is which is included at the bottom of the bike-rack, sofar no-one could tell us what it is

First here a photo of the back of the camper:

IMG_1394.jpg

And here a photo of the bottom part of the bike-rack of which we really cant imagine the function.

Can anyone help us out ??

Thanks Roger,

The construction looks to fragile to tow a trailer.

A round pipe will fit into it, but nothing there to secure it :shout:

started when I was 11 with my parents-forgot to stop!been real one since 1980!
It looks like it is for a drop in rack for a scooter or motorbike.

Hi, just a thought, it looks like an aftermarket fit (new section bolted on) maybe its to slot an aerial in or perhaps a flag pole?

Whichever country you are in, stick that country's flag on a pole into the round slot. The cops will defintely not move you on if you are parked illegally.

Yes,

I'd go along with the additional cycle carrier (witter style)

You could always use it for an aerial extension pole I suppose, depending on the diameter of the tube!!

I go for the flag pole idea - the Dutch are very keen on displaying orange flags at every opportunity.

If not that then its probably for a bike rack - looks too flimsy to carry a scooter or motorbike.

Looks like a socket to mount a sat dish to me.

i reckon at some time its been a towbar and maybe modified.....why else would you have a trailer electrics socket on the right hand bumper?

john.

To power a lighting board perhaps, when the bikes are on and the number plate is obscured.

Looking again at the hinge point of the bike rack, I cannot see how another set of bikes would go on, using a witter style mount.

Flag pole sounds more feasable now.

Hi ShiftZZ,

No its not coaxcable, this picture is taken on the beach in spain and the cable is my electricity cable

Hi dougcumiskey,
the camper has his own built in sat dish, so why mount a second sat dish ?

Hi papajohn,
the electrics socket puzzles me as well, see also my remark to American Dream

Hi American Dream,
Good observation, didnt notice it myself but you are right when the bike rack is down the center of the "unidentified object::bigsmile:" is between the back of the camper and the standing place of the first bike"

Hi haganap,
you are absolutely right, although a little worn, its a buerstner sticker, but that's at the right top of my camper :ROFLMAO:
But maybe you know what the sticker on the left top of my camper stands for, we really have no idea

And thanks to all the others for your suggestions

if it is for a flagpole i wouldnt want to use it.

its only inches from the back panel of the van and the larger poles do tend to flex a bit in the wind so it would be hitting the van all the time the wind blew a bit.:Eeek::Eeek:

the whole bikerack/light protector looks very much over engineered to me.

my conclusion is its for a detachable tube to secure the bikes to.

looks like when the bike rack is down and in use there is no upper support to fix the bikes to. they would not be secure enough just tied to the wheel runners.

the faimma type has the fixing arms built into the upper frame.

definatly over engineered.

just looked again and i'm talking rubbish.....never noticed the hinge point :Doh::Doh:

best thing would be to remove it all and give yourself more ground clearance :thumb::thumb::thumb:

Hi AlasdairM,

thanks for the nice picture !
but I cannot see the details of the bike rack

Could you perhaps crop that part out of the picture ??

None yet - hope to soon though
Hi Onderweg,

The pic I posted is from a blog on the net, and I don't think cropping the pic would help at all?
I was simply suggesting that there may have been an upright metal pole/rod/shaft inserted in the bracket in your picture so a bike could be mounted similarly to the image I posted. Sorry I cannot be more help!

Good luck with your researches, A

I think it,s to accomodate a lighting board for when bikes are carried, hope you don,t think I,m hijacking your thread but I also have some strange goings on on the back of my Compass Drifter. Look at the two holes either side of the reg. plate???, I think these could serve the same purpose:winky: ,I can push a 38mm. tube into each of these holes about a metre through two 45mm box sections attatched to the chassis, anyone got any ideas???

Papa John I thought your last comment about a heavy bike was silly, however the two hole's in this one, are clearly for mid air re fueling:thumb:
