Forgot to ask the vendor what this is for, but I'm guessing it's something to do with the box of tricks I discovered tucked away in the corner of the overhead storage shelf? There is a non-latching push button and what looks like a LED light mounted nearby.

Looks like a remote link (hands free) to mobile phone.

Cheers all! Hell of a lot of wires up there - I thought it was some kind of alarm. What is the function of the push button and LED, or are they nothing to do with the hands free?

The push button could be the on/off link when mobile rings, be worth an experiment with mobile. Have a look on back of speaker unit for any maker.

It is securely fixed in place (don't know how) - I didn't want to start ripping it out until I knew what it was and what all the wires are for.

Try putting in reverse and get someone to walk behind van to see if the speaker makes a noise
it should!

As mentioned, the first two pictures relate to a hands-free phone kit, mic and speaker. The button could be to power the radio when the ignition is off, whether it will cut out to avoid flattening the battery after a bit of time I'm not sure.

The alternative is to contact the vendor and ask what the bits are for - but that would spoil our fun.

I wondered if it was a kit to allow you to yell at the kids in the back and electrocute them when they ignored you.

As recommended by bowesj - I selected reverse and an electronic beeping sound emanated from the shelf above my head. Had a walk around the back of the vehicle and that's when I noticed the 4 sensors mounted in the bumper moulding - doh!
Still don't know what the push button and LED light are for though

If it still works 100% it was to cut the sensors when you had a trailer/bike rack etc that might affect the sensor.
mine hasn’t worked for ages but the sensors are a god send in the dark.

ps the mic has nothing to do with the “speaker”, you’ll probably find it chases back to the radio
