Hi, could anyone help me out with some info about Dungeness at this time of year, best spots for birding ( feathered) ,
Wild camping anywhere near for a night or two?
Good campsite very close?
Havent been there for 45 years!!!
Any nice facts or tips appreciated too….

Been there a couple of times via the Romney-Hythe railway.
Very interesting but desolate place, designated (I think) as the only desert in the UK.
A few folks living there in old railway trucks (converted to living accommodation)
Even the power station is interesting if only to wonder how anybody would be allowed to build such a monstrosity.
Hythe at the other end of the line is interesting too.

Pilot Inn for a stopover. You used be able to overnight in the station carpark by the powerstation but believe the Nuclear Police now move you on.

The Pilot Inn only allows you after 6pm and you have to be gone by 8 or 9am I think.

We went there in December - having got the OK over the phone, with no mention of times.

We got there at 2.30pm. Ordered sandwiches and drinks. We were then told by the Landlady we had to drive off and come back after 6.00pm, but we could finish our drinks and lunch before we left!

We went to a CS outside Rye rather than go back to the Pilot.

Pity because we love wandering along the beach at Dungeness.

CS could work, do you remember its name at all? Thanks in advance

Visit the kart track at Heron park you might even see me on (the 10th April )a race da, second Sunday of every month practice day on Saturdays water skiing in the lake beside it and great fishing 40lb carp

There’s a CL just to the north, Shingle Hall Farm and a CS to the west called Mackley Farm.

Red dots are CLs, green dots CSs in the attached photo.

There’s also a commercial caravan park at New Romney which is CCC associated, no idea what it’s like though.

Along the road just a handful of miles is Rye harbour nature reserve, a lot of twitchers go there and you get the odd van over night on the road adjacent to the car park, so you easily do both Rye harbour & Dungeness.

There’s also one of the Dungeness locals who has been collecting ‘stuff’ off the shoreline for years, fishing rods, bits of tent and so on.
Made a big pile outside his place, a bit of a local landmark

Eagles Garth, Rye. It’s a weird sort of place, very friendly couple, toilet and shower (we didn’t use either), hard standing area for van. £15 for night. We had the toad, but quite a way out of Rye, so you would have to visit Rye in the van, then get to Eagles Garth to spend the night.

uzsnowdrop - looking at your van, you could visit Dungeness and get to the Pilot after 6.00pm, and pay for a meal there, or do what you want to do, then get to Eagles Garth and pay £15 for the night there. (y)

We're in Dungeness tonight. Wilding at Lade carpark about a mile or so further north along the beach road from the Pilot Inn. Free between 6pm and 8am, and around £1 an hour during the day, with a a maximum spend of £6 for the day.
Walked down earlier to see Derek Jarman's house and garden and the lighthouses. Had a pint at The Britannia Inn by the new lighthouse. Looked more inviting than The Pilot. Lovely real fire and chatty bar staff.

It's a very unique, bleak, and quite otherworldly spot, all in the shadow of the nuclear power station.

I'll let you know if it's a quiet park up or not in the morning!

I called the Pilot earlier; they do not allow overnight parking over the weekend, Friday to Sunday.

We live local and one of the best places to wild camp for PVC's is just a 15 minute drive along the coast at St. Mary's Bay. From New Romney High Street take the main A259 towards St. Mary's Bay and after about 2 miles and just before you enter SMB look on your left for Car Repairs / Bay Cafe then within 100 metres turn right onto a small road that heads towards the beach. At the end of the road is free parking for about 8 cars right next to the beach. I can take some photos and post tomorrow if you like. Otherwise you are welcome to park on our or our elderly neigbours drive, just drop me a line for contact details.

Went by there once and it looked like a rally loads of vans parked up most were CB's.

I used to deliver frozen fish to M & M Richardson opposite the pilot inn in Dungeness once a week hated it as it's a long drive from our depo(oxford) in a 7.5 ton often running out of driving hours on the way back made a for a loooong day. would leave the depo at 6.30 am and get back to the depo at 10.30 pm some times depending on the M25 often pulled my digi card and carried on driving without it
