January 15th 2016 sees us heading for our first adventure in Spain! We have traveled extensively in France, done a trip to Italy and spent a month or so in Germany but we have no experience of Spain.
We will be sailing from Portsmouth to Santander on the Cap Finistere with the intention of motoring to the south of Spain in search of the sun if necessary, but if the north of Spain offers warmth and dryness we shall do some touring in the north.
If you are travelling the same route give us a wave and if anyone would like to offer any sound advice on must see or must do's, when in Spain please let us know.

You need to be on the med coast to have decent weather, anywhere from Murcia onwards.
No rain for 8 weeks at La Manga.

Still making mistakes! But they're not as costly.
Don't stay North. Head to the water and then some. Even here, the sun is elusive. :)

We're travelling down the same week, but are crossing on the tunnel.

We've yet to decide whether to cross the Pyrenees via somport tunnel or Perpignan (we have some friends in St Cyprian and may call in to see them for a cpl of days)

After that we will be using Camper Contact until it gets warm, we've no return tunnel booked but will be staying about 3 months.

Hopefully bump into some funsters en route.

@normanandsue we're also heading for Spain for the first time in January (date to be decided). We use the tunnel and will probably use the route through France suggested by @tonka

We're currently making a few improvements to the moho to make it a bit cosier.

Looking forward to bumping into some funsters - not literally of course.

Spain and Spanish roads are brilliant but do not even think of staying in the north. Madrid has snow in January and the centre of Spain can get very cold indeed including freezing fog. As advised, head south below Murcia and then you should be into blue skies although the wind can be chilly. Only when you reach the coast around Gibralter and the Algarve can you expect warm weather. Check out the weather on your internet.

Looks like you'll be docking at 5:30 local time, give up to an hour for disembarkation, less if you're lucky, you might be best to head for the nearest Aire. There's a thread about this further down about a newish Aire just minutes from the port at Santander. The alternative, Cabarceno is about half an hour away.

You'll find much of Spain below Madrid a lot warmer and sunnier than a chilly Dunfermline January. We're from the Borders and the past 3 years we've found plenty warm weather away from the coast. Just check the forecasts - choose a few as they can differ quite a bit. Up in the mountains of Murcia or the Sierra Nevada can be very warm during the day.

We spent a fortnight in Extramadura a year past December and were very lucky with the weather. We enjoyed some good walks and cycling and a guided wildlife tour of the Monfrague PN organised by the campsite. It was well worth the money to see the vultures and a pair of Iberian Eagles.

Had a lovely journey down to Portsmouth, met up with Whiskeymac at the ferry and had a good chat, guided us to the aire at Lierganes, spent a good night and a pleasant Sunday touring the hills round about temps not to hot 12 degrees or so. Lovely Sunday market too.
Left Monday in pouring rain that continued all day and managed to reach an aire at Cascante for early evening after getting lost in the hills as we left Lierganes. The car park is near a local sports centre and were rudely awKened when a football pinged off the roof as Messey junr mis hit his kick over a massive fence.
Met a couple who had motored tbrough France and were on their way to Valencia.
Tuesday had a pleasant drive down to the coast to an aire at Bellevei de penedes the owner of the aire was welcoming and even provided me with a spanish hook up lead as the sockets were not standard ehu. The only other accupants were a Spanish worker and 2 brits both narrow boat owners and were wintering around southern Spain.
Today a more leisurely drive to Stop and Go at Peniscola a larger aire but only 7 euro pn inc showers and free wifi ehu extra but all sold out, but not needed for tonight. Todays best temp 20 degrees all sunshine, (missing snow back home?)
Tomorrow will be a domestic day, shopping, washing and cleaning out mh.
Will post more news in a few days.

Hi mr & mrs tinc, we are basking in the sun on a lovely little aire just outside Cartegena, intend to pop into gown tomorrow for a bit of sightseeing and will leave on Tuesday and head a little further south before swinging north towards Santander and our boat home on the 11th. Sorry we will not make it down go Marbella this year maybe next year if all goes well.

We're off to spain mid March. If there's decent snow on the pyrenees we might stop there. If not we will continue sun hunting along the med.
