MAN didnt get caught for emissions cheating maybe ?

More likely to try and compete with Iveco whose vans are seen as smaller trucks rather than VW vans which are beefed up cars . Iveco are doing really well in the van market recently

Depends on where they market it price wise IE cheaper or dearer than the VW crafter---if like cars the VW is premium price with Seat and Skoda cheaper ----may be all about numbers picking up a bigger slice of market share and competing with the Merc version

ALSO SEEN SOME NEW LDV VANS ABOUT RECENTLY

Seven speed sprinter here. The new one is 9 speed. I often wonder why so many but apparently more efficient. Nobody told the motor in mine. It drinks more than a funsters at a rally on a hot evening

It's so you can have a higher final drive ratio, better mpg easier cruising. If high ratio, 4 speed box difficult to pull of from a standing start. Steep hill starts impossible.

There are other advantages too. If the torque converter input and output shaft speeds are more often closely matched then the lock-up clutch can be engaged for more of the time which also improves economy and keeps the gearbox cooler. Better economy with lower & higher ratio limits would benefit a manual gearbox but have to be offset against the necessary gearbox size and weight (and driver effort). Each extra ratio adds around an inch to the length of a manual gearbox . Probably less than a third of that for an auto.
