Does anybody know or have experience of these please? Mileage per gallon etc.. Use as household vehicle, etc. This is an L reg one.

If they are the Toyota 2.5 diesel then a brilliant engine, as any engine service history would be good and cam belt change.
They are considered bullet proof, same engine in the Toyota Hilux, wonderful reliability if looked after.

My daughter has a P reg Japanese import, the one in the picture has a different body shape and looks newer but L reg is 1993.
She loves it, uses it has her daily drive, narrower than many cars and only 4.5 metres long, hers is a pop top and under 2m high so can get under most height barriers.
Hers has a 2.8 litre non turbo charged engine, automatic and is a bit of a chugger but as CazPaul says the engines are virtually bulletproof.I see many of them in Portugal from the 80's.
Fuel economy is not the best compared to modern vehicles but probably 25 around town and 30 on a run.

Our previous van Daisy was a high-top Toyota HiAce, 1994 M reg. Small on the outside but surprisingly roomy inside due to the cab/driving position being so far forward. 2.8 litre non-turbo engine is slow up hills, we had an auto box which meant copious apologies to anyone following us uphill at 23 mph. Only problems we had were with rusty panels, the chassis was solid.

Easy to drive and manoeuvre, as the front wheels are actually behind you!

Had one for a work van in Aus for a while. High mileage when I got it , even higher when I got rid. Very smooth Automatic box. Only got rid to help me keep my tax down, swopped for a nearly new Mitsi L300, which blew its motor with 80k kilometres under the belt. Changed that for a Nissen Vanette, another good vehicle for around town.

The only thing I do not like about them is that you are sitting over the front wheel & for some people, including me, you cannot get the seat back far enough to be comfortable as the wheel arch starts to catch behind your legs.

There is the small disadvantage of your knee-caps being the crumple zone . I drove an Austin J4 for a few years in the early '70s. I loved the driving position and ease of placing it - sitting effectively on the front wheel arch makes driving easy.

If you're considering one that is a fresh import, get it undersealed straight away, they don't use salt on the roads in Japan so don't usually bother with underseal. If it's been here for a few years check it thoroughly for corrosion.

I had the Hiace 3 litre turbo drove like a limousine 30 MPG. As a 8 seater MPV could not fault it, complete with onboard kettle and fridge run off the A/C. Effortless drive not sure about the camper conversions suspect they are quirky master pieces.

We hired one and drove round a large chunk of Australia for 3 months in ‘06. From the base vehicle perspective, we were told the locals preferred Toyota’s for 4x4 and vans as they considered them bullet proof. We covered some serious miles without any issues. Used no oil, didnt lose any coolant and started first time every time.

Ours was a custom build and setup as camper as main use so can’t add too much as everyday vehicle. As we were travelling budget was tight, but don’t remember it being particularly thirsty. It wasn’t super quick, but that wasn’t a priority and it went everywhere - from gravel and sandy roads, to the supermarket carpark.
