Resisting the usual cafe comments, it depends on what you are looking for. A canal cruise (very touristy) is good to get a feel for the place, there are some nice museums and quite a few appalling restaurants. trip advisor should help avoid the worst ones. Holland is not known for its haute cuisine - even my Dutch colleagues say that. It also isn't particularly cheap, but a nice atmosphere. Hope that helps a bit - there will be others along soon

Elaine enjoyed it I was not so sure at first but did enjoy it as it was raining
Dam square well worth it
Down the working girls ally certainly a eye opener (adults only)
Get a day tram pass well worth it don't forget a tram map
We go over once a year on the booze cruise out of hull normaly Thursday night boat home Sunday or Monday
It's certanly not a cheap city but nice for a bit of fun and a change of scenery
Chips and Mayo in a cone not to be missed

Still making mistakes! But they're not as costly.
We stayed at Gaaspar for five days last year and will be there again for three days this coming weekend. :) We love Amsterdam, there is so much to see and do. If you want any specifics on the site or transport in or out of the city, please ask. (y)

Amsterdam is a lovely city if you keep away from the red light area, not that I didn't enjoy that. As Dux says some of the resturants can be awful more so the ones in the above area. We have been a couple of times and stay at city camp for Motorhomes with free ferry service to and from city takes about 15mins.
If you do go down the red light area which you will check out the blue lights, they give you a little extra :)

Nice to see the avatar....... Fingers crossed for the weather; a plan B might be a good idea and at least you know that public transport is very good. Cheers

Ditto , but if you have booked your camp , it's of little use to you, been in many of the argentine restaurants , never had a bad one, Ann franks a good place to wander for an hour , don't see anything wrong with the red light area , just a laugh, and as ,as been said the ferrys running around the canals are good value.
Have spent 4 New Years there , although not in the van and dam square and all the roads leading off have been jam packed and never seen one iota of trouble.
