up in Scotland happily driving along and a loud warning tone starts to come from our Sargent control panel on our Swift motorhome and a strange symbol in top corner that I have never seen before (picture included.)

Thankfully warning tone stops when ignition switched off.

Any ideas anyone please

Now you mention it diagram does look like a step. Strangely step works normally and retracts when engine starts as it should do.

Has been very wet so wonder if that has got in to the step motor box mid journey.

Oh joy

ASK @Jaws for advice on those things, he loves them and know all about the little quibbles you get with them.

Ours is a Swift, and that is definitely the steps out symbol.

microswitch under the step has got wet and stuck or corroded, try some WD 40 on it. or just disconnect it if it still work automatically.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Strangely ours has never displayed step sign even when step out.

Step sign disappeared overnight and now able to drive without the wailing.

Oh the joy as our motorhomes get more complex and electronic.

It will normally only show up when the step is out and the engine is on, because it assumes that you have forgotten to put the step in. It won't show when the step is out and the engine is not on, as it will assume you have meant the step to be out.
