Just before we are about to leave (tomorrow) for a 3 week trip down to the south of spain and the algarve i find that I have another water leak in the back garage coming from the left side filler cap (see pic), earlier in the year the right side leaked as was replaced by the dealer. I have drained down and cleaned out garage and tried tightning it but it appears to be tight anyway, i have now filled back up with 80% full and currently it is not leaking (it took some time before but will be checking it every hour). Dealer is sending me out another one tomorrow by 9am but if this ones holds i may take it with me and replace it whilst away but i need to be able to tighten it.

My questions are
1. Why is it now not leaking when it was certainly coming out before i drained it?
2. How do i tighten the filler cap when i put a new one on?

Forgive the stupid q's

Is it leaking looks like a small hole in centre as a breather, will come out going along shouldn’t be much though

I wish it was that simple, it was enough to cover the floor of the garage both sides within 30mins

Does it have a rubber seal?

If its leaking around the rubber seal then you could try removing the cap, applying a thin coat of vaseline to the seal and re applying the cap

Its definitely coming out around the seal, thanks for the tip.

Our water tank hatch leaked after the cap had been refitted.was told to fill the tank 3/4full with the cap off then tighten and finish filling never had a problem after that.

Just realised after reading Ali Gs post it's the INSPECTION CAP.. . NOT the FILLER cap as originally posted.

That makes a hell of a difference to diagnosing the problem and makes it easier if the correct terminology is used.

That is just the injection moulding point.

I take it that is the inspection cap, they do need to be very tight. Try wiping the O ring with olive oil, should allow you to tighten it harder and will stop it sticking when you come to undo it.

Yes, looks the same as on my Bürstner, always seem a bit stiff to close.

I was told it was filler cap by the dealer and a picture was attached which should of avoided the confusion. I would prefer it that you keep your comments to yourself if not assisting.

Guess there would be but you'd need to be careful not to strip the thread on the plastic cap!
Surely if it's got a rubber seal under it hand tightened would suffice but others with same may have a different opinion. Overtightening may, potentially. just squeeze the seal out and damage it?

When the dealer replaced the first cap earlier in the year they said they use a tool to tighten it. Never said what tool though. Some good tips here so will give it a go when it arrives in the morning. Stress levels are quite high at the moment. Last thing i need just before departing

An empty tank can sometimes get slightly out of shape this is why we were told to fill to 3/4 full which allows the tank to return to normal and the screw cap will seal ok .

This one is on the inside at the bottom of the tank. But useful to know..

If you posted what it was it would have helped. Have you ever filled via the inspection cap.... I thought not.

How can that possibly be a FILLER CAP

Guess you could knock-up something yourself out of a bit of 3" board and three small blocks of wood screwed together to fit the finger grip recesses?
Having said that, do you need to fill the tank up to the top? Could you not travel with it 1/2 - 3/4 full?
Anyway, stop fretting it'll be alright on the night, well tomorrow morning!(y);) Have a great trip away.:xThumb:

The tank started to leak at some point during filling, i emptied it to clean it all out then filled again but seemed to be ok. What i have in there is more than enough but i don't trust it now as i haven't done anything to solve it.

If you opened \ removed the cap and then replaced it could it have been something as simple as the seal wasn't locating correctly (perhaps even overtighted!)? Our some foreign body (no, not an illegal immigrant!) trapped between the seal and the body?

Never removed this one since owning the mh, i did try and see if it was loose but it wouldn't budge. If i get to remove it before i go i will be able to see if anything between the seal. Worth checking anyway

Know what you mean - these things always happen (or you discover them) at the worst time.

You could always leave the tank empty and take a few bottles of water for drinking etc. leaving the repair or testing until you are at your destination. Or maybe part fill the tank at the places you stop (just enough for hot water / heating) and then drain before you move on. Not ideal but it is a work around.

That will be a last resort but definitely one to consider
Thanks

Make one, a short length of timber with a couple of blocks screwed to it.

might give this a go as when i spoke to the dealer they said hand tight was not tight enough

As an another temporary \ make do fix could you put some waterproof duct tape over it until you get a chance to do the proper fix?
