I know everyone here likes a good toilet thread....so hopefully someone will have the answer for me :giggle:

The toilet on our Carthago has an annoying habit of "burping" when you open the slide....I know we could just use it with the slide open, but we don't have a SOG (yet! But that's another job for another day) so we prefer to keep the slide closed when in "use".....but then the "burp" when you open the slide causes a bit of an upwards splash kind of thing....which isn't very nice. We didn't notice this on either of our previous MHs (they had the same Thetford C260) so when I took the cassette out this morning, to give it a good clean up  and lubricate the seals I had a good look around and I noticed we seem to be missing a part.......I'm sure on our previous MHs there was a blank plate with a bump in it which activated a vent on the inside of the cassette.

Instead, we just have a gap:

My memory might be faulty - is this normal? Or am I right and we're missing a part? If so, what's it called?

Isn’t that where you fit the Thetford filter fan ?
I think DuxDeluxe has some he was selling as he over ordered but that was a while back .

After many years we read the instructions on how to use the toilet (actually last year), it says.... When you use the toilet, open the slider, when finished flush and close the slider. We never did this before and on hot days suffered from 'Burps'. Our cassette has a built-in breather that should stop the burp I think, but is not always effective.

The manual for the C260 specifically says "The toilet can be used with blade open or closed".

It should have one or other of these breathers, they can be taken out and cleaned to check that they are still working 👍

The C360 series of Thetford cassette toilets have the same basic mouldings. The more sophisticated versions (if you can call a toilet sophisticated) incorporate the ventilation kit. You can get this kit (basically fan, electronics, one charcoal filter, and a tube to stick through your van's floor - drill a hole) to upgrade / retrofit your loo).

Even with the kit factory fitted, I sometimes experience the burp / splashback effect if pressure has built up in the cassette. So the venting thing seems to work only if the fan was running.

There Should be a plastic plate with a foam seal on it which seals to the to the cassette vent
That's what I thought...looks like we have a bit missing.

With our previous MH with the same model we occasionally had the burp if we were at a higher altitude, which is understandable. But this one does it virtually every time. Will try to find the part that's missing and see if that improves things.

Can you put a pic of your cassette up. On my cassette it has a vent operated / closed by push rod, and a float. This was stuck shut. Fixed that and no more “burp”

Well that's true as it can still be used whether open or shut.
We have a 260 with SOG and other than making a noise like a mooing cow it does nothing else. I also get the "burp" after I have put the 2nd cassette in after standing for a couple of days after emptying. The valve on the top is free so should release the pressure when I slide it in. No we are back from Spain I am going to have a poke around the cassette and see if the seals are ok.

As for SOG. Not impressed.

Coming back to this thread.....I've since been in contact with Thetford who tell me that the part we're missing isn't available as a spare  So it appears the only solution to this issue is a whole new toilet (which is absolutely crazy). I've posted a wanted add in case anyone has one hanging around (long shot I know!).

I don't know much about 3D printing....is that a potential option to explore?

Firstly in reply to your original post I thought Carthago fitted SOG as standard.
Second as you have now found out you are a part missing I've included a clearer pic of the offending piece, I'd think anyone with the 3D printer and expertise to programme it will be able to make one.
The Thetford fan unit has been mentioned, I fitted one to our current van, always had SOG and was tempted by the fact the genuine Thetford one was just a bit cheaper and perhaps easier to install, my advise would be don't choose Thetford it is far noisier and does not work as well as the SOG (in my opinion) it also requires you to start it by pressing the flush button and then stop it with the flashing green button, or wait for it to time out which seems to take forever

Few years now
If you fit a SOG, you dont need that part.
Last part of my instructions were to remove it.

Easy solution.....
Drill a 20mm hole in the recess for the filter fits. Cover with a piece of charcoal filter material.
Renew filter as needed

It's caused by the air lock effect, as stated previously open the slider slightly to prevent any "splash back".

Not in the OP's case, without the missing part the built in tank breather cannot work, hence the build up of pressure in tank.
The newer Thetford toilets have a different arrangement with the breather than the older ones.

Alternative pressure relief procedure:
1. Approach loo. Open & close slide to release any pressure build up since last use before any liquid goes in the bowl.
2. Lift lid (& seat if required). Use loo. If needed, add any initial flush water to ensure a 'clean drop' **
3. Lower lid. Open & close slide.
4. Raise lid & complete any further flush or cleaning required. Check & if required, clean underside of lid in case anti-burp procedure not 100% effective. This is preferable to having to clean face & glasses.
5. Put lid down & wash hands as your mother taught you. Leaving the lid up is even more of a capital offence in a m/h than at home, as it makes a nasty crash when it falls down as you negotiate the first roundabout.

** Top tip No 1: a few sheets of toilet paper in the bottom of the bowl before adding any semi-solids assists in ensuring a 'clean drop'. Also open the slide in one swift movement.

Top tip No 2: Domestic toilet brushes are impractical in a m/h (unless palatial). In the event of failure of tip 1, one of those little brushes normally used for dish washing works well. Just don't mix them up.

All part of the FUN.:rofl:
