.
I have on the mot a advisor about missing brake spring.
I now have the springs there just a plate that sits on top of the brake pads.

the most expensive thin steel ever.

anyway I went to release the brake assembly only to find out I don’t have the right size allan key to open it.
it’s is not 1/2 “ as I have been told by someone not on the forum.
so again the question is. What size Allan key would I need for this.

quite a simple job with the right tool.

thanks in advance.

Base vehicle and year please.
Photo would help, not sure what you are trying to undo.

1/2" doesnt sound right .
I would be very surprisedif it was imperial.
Maybe 12 or 13

Its the anti rattle spring(plate ) that goes over the top of the pads?

I perhaps should not say this BUT you don't sound as if you do not know a great deal about vehicles and, perhaps, the brakes are not the best place to start!
IF this is the case, get someone more experienced to fix it while you assist?

Look like the type that clip onto the caliper.
The 1/2" allen key does NOT sound right.
Ive no idea what size it is though sorry but 99.9% certain it will be metric.

Done quite a few in the past but got rid of all the tools a few years ago when I
thought we we moving into something very small.

If its an advisory, its not critical but will need looking at. Get a good set of tools together first.

yes it will be a metric size as all the rest seems to be all the nuts bolts ect
I guess I will just have to buy a whole set.

I also want to replace the gator rubbers at the same time there on order .

Halfords do some good tools if you go for their own brand expert range.

If you mean the cv joint boot, you will probably need a heavy duty torque wrench, I think my 2001 Fiat 2.8idtd is 400nm

No the rubbers to the brake calipers

Never noticed the missing spring. When it was done .
just something at the back of my mind said check the mot.

Can't imagine why an MOT inspector would consider these as an advisory? They are anti-rattle clips and perform no other function. They could never be considered a safety related component.
Bit like telling you your wheel nut plastic covers were missing...............

Geoff

I was thinking that and also, how can they see that with the wheel on? It may be possible but he would have to be looking bl**dy hard?

Perhaps it was listed on an old MOT

sonar The Allen key you your talking about is 14mm.
You do NOT need to do anything except take the wheel off and clip them in.
Your MOT tester must be phcycic as you can’t see them without taking the wheel off 🤔

I will post a copy of it as soon as I can.

I think there was a bit of history Between the garage and the last owner.

listed as a front offside brake spring.
I assumed that’s what we’re talking about.

Yes I can see that now theres Enough room for that.
if I can bend them it they will be fitted today just difficult with a damaged thumb at the moment.
just going to check the other side today.

IF I remember correctly, do NOT bend them, take the wheel off. Once bent to any significant amount, they lose their springiness and will not stay clipped in.

Thanks. Did you notice the bottom of the mot . Brake spring. It is hard to see .
