Hi, I've only recently joined MH Fun, so here's another newbie question for you... :)

We are going to Spain for just over a month in mid October, catching the ferry to Santander with our Auto-Trail Frontier. I've had a look at some previous posts, but would like to ask for some advice, if that's ok?

I had thought about travelling along the north coast and down towards Portugal, hopefully that's pretty scenic? It would be good to have t-shirt weather, so am wondering whether that area will be warm enough in Oct/Nov, or should we go towards the Mediterranean?

Am I correct in saying that the choices of Aires/campsites will be better if we go along the north coast? Thanks for any help...

Hi and welcome to FUN. (y) Can’t help with your question, I’ve always been of the opioid that Northern Spain is like Cornwall, so colder than the South.

Thanks David, 👍 Guess it will be cooler, hopefully I'll be able to get a steer on whether there's an option for somewhere with nice scenery, some warmth and OK campsites in Oct/Nov. 🙂

North Coast of Spain weather can variable at that time of year. Fairly cool low 20's October you will still get a few days at 30°.
Going along the North of Spain and down into Portugal is a nice trip we have done it a couple of times.
Most campsites closed in the North that time of year but plenty of Aires/Camper Stops & wild spots you won't have any trouble finding somewhere to stop.

Have a look at my trips, links in my signature.

We have just taken our Summer, in Galicia, Asturias and Cantabria...during August Spain roasted, but on the coast in Galicia it was 22/23 degrees..the rest of Spain late 30..
For Comparison take a holiday in Cornwall during the same months...
There are plenty of Aires, some campsites but this time of the year the north coast is very quiet, can be wet and windy...
We experienced 5°c last night...however a 25° daytime temperature was fine..we are coming to the end of our trip and returning to Murcia for the winter....currently our town has 30°
Low to mid twenties during October/November..
Your proposed trip would be brilliant...however the months chosen wouldn't encourage me to be that far north..

Scenery is no problem, plenty of very nice scenery in the North. The North, especially north west, of Spain is not called Greeen Spain for nothing. It does get quite a bit of rain. Saying that every year is different. No-one (even the experts) can give you a definite forecast of what the weather might do.

Andy Mckettrick's book "Go West" gives a lot of great info on places to go, visit and stay. It's available from Amazon as an ebook.

Thanks Junartoo, will have a look for the book. Looks like we may go along the north coast for a while and then go further south on the Med side. I got an impression from reading a few posts that it may be hit and miss to find an OK place to stay on the Med side? Hopefully just a few bad experiences?

An alternative to the coast is to travel South to the area surrounding Burgos and then turn right (ie West)

You can then follow, loosely, the route of the Camino de Santiago and visit towns, cities such as Carrion de los Condes, Sahagun,Leon, Astorga and Pontferrada.

Well recommended.

Thanks, have emailed a campsite north of Burgos (Cabuérniga) for availability for our first stay over. We arrive on 12 October which we have found out that it's a public holiday in Spain, so wonder whether they will take arrivals that day ??

We've just had a lovely few days at Frias. Now driving through Haro slowly heading south.

Still very warm here. October???
Yes, will hopefully be nice and warm. I ordered the book you mentioned, so thanks for the tip. 👍
