Another nail in the coffin...

Pathetic, they just don't want Motorhomes in the UK, one reason we don't bother with the UK. We have been traveling around northern Spain and Portugal for the last 4 weeks nearly everywhere we have stayed has had free Motorhome parking and free services.

Yes, the comments show the usual lack of knowledge about the law in this country, both as regards the difference between camping and parking and as regards the hoops councils &c have to jump through in their treatment of "travellers".

May I suggest, yet again, that if anyone wants the law in the UK changing then they should get off their backsides and do something about it - because whinging comments on local newspaper web sites or other social media sites will make not a ha'p'orth of difference.

That is true Graham..... talk is cheap but legislation is not. Makes good Daily Mail headlines as well, unfortunately

sounds like councillor in burnham on sea who has interest in the pier there accusing motorhomers of parking near there and emptying casettes that was a load of boxxxxxs, she ended up resigning, the only ones i see dumping rubbish are the local kids throwing trash about, setting fire to bins tables etc, will be going to west bay in couple of weeks will try and find out whats been happening,

Council leader Tony Alford said he visited one Sunday morning and found about 20 parked up: “I would be surprised if they all arrived that morning...this is something these people have been taking advantage of.”

You can't "take advantage " of something that is freely available to anyone.

“I don't know how the word spreads but the news has now spread that this is somewhere to park for free,” he said.
It's worrying that they employ people who have no understanding of how information is distributed.

West Dorset's strategy committee heard that there had been problems with people emptying their onboard loos into nearby public toilets
& ?? What are they for?

Until there is some form of encouraging legislation from a government department, perhaps as an urban tax incentive, I fear that negative responses from local councils is inevitable.
For certain we are not all angels and although one would like to believe we could follow some code of responsibility to the environment, it is never going to happen.
It is you making the mess that gets left, because I know it is not me!

Bravo. Well said.

Never was so much F****up by the few for the many..

Can I blame the council?
No.

The blame is firmly at the door of the few, and that will never change, they will move and bugger it up at the next pitch..

Am I the only one on here who is still waiting, (in this age where everyone seems to have a phone with a camera) that I have not seen published a photo showing someone in the act of emptying a cassette in a place other than a place reserved for that purpose, or even a photo of the detritus following such a disposal. (Horrible though that would be.)
And, as for emptying a cassette in a toilet, Jeez, what are toilets for.

There seems to be a popular campaign to deter motor homes from parking anywhere other than the designated motorhome sites (that I dread and avoid at all costs)

Any exaggeration or comment is acceptable if it exaggerates or blows up the problem in the favour of banning any stop-overs off site. I have never seen evidence of toilet waste dumping either but it does sound good when you are telling one side of an argument.

As I write I am in Donezanac in the Correze in the centre of France. We have eaten in a local restaurant and are now parked in a car park where there is a single other car. We will make no noise, no mess and our visit was very much appreciated by the restaurateur who complained that business was bad.

Last night we stayed in Saint-Maure-Touraine in the designated camping car area which has toilets etc. The council worker who emptied the rubbish bins and took our bin bag for us commented how welcome we were as we helped the local economy. I asked him if he had any problems with the camping car area and he said that people always left it in perfect condition.

There seems to be a great many people who cannot wait to amplify and exaggerate small problems.

Now there lies the problem can't be more than ½ doz in England. I don't count camp sites as IMO they are unsuitable for Motorhomes and I'll admit to disliking them.

Just to clarify a couple of points.

Councillors are not employed by LAs, they are elected by voters (including some who own motorhomes). If councillors lack the necessary understanding to do their jobs it is because those who voted for them lack the necessary understanding to vote sensibly.

Public toilets were built for their designed function long before the invention of Thetford cassettes. Toilets may be designed for the hygienic disposal of human waste but they were never designed for people to empty cassettes in them because they can't be bothered to use somewhere that was designed for the job.

We go down to Bridport and West Bay frequently on a Sunday morning and I have never seen more than 5 motorhomes parked in the station car park but normally just one or two.

If, like the rest of Europe and many other countries, they provided facilities for motorhomes to use, they wouldn’t have a problem

One, two, five or fifty, it doesn't matter. If camping there is illegal it is illegal, end of story.

As a matter of interest, how many countries do provide such facilities for motorhomes to use?
Is it really every other European country (which is what "the rest of Europe" means) or just a minority?
Are there really "many other countries" which do so or just a few?

Can anyone provide a definitive list?

Errr. What is the problem? Even you are not claiming that the toilets are getting blocked.

The cassettes are fairly small it is not as though 50 litres is being put down in one go. Saying that 'the toilets are not designed for it' is just an excuse to moan about people acting responsibly. As long as the lavatory is cleaned properly afterwards I see absolutely no problem whatsoever.

As well as those above, Denmark, Sweden, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Romania, Italy, Finland, Netherlands, USA, Belarus, Slovenia, Slovakia...... and most other European countries including Russia.
It’s easier to say which countries don’t provide motorhome parking, with the UK at or near the top of the list.
Then there’s Japan with over 1000 sites known as michi no eki......

Well it does not happen in France, Germany etc.

The changes at Station Yard come about after complaints from residents about both motor homes and caravans using the car park overnight without being charged. Up to 30 at a time have been taking advantage of the free overnight parking after it featured on a website.

This is the problem. Featured on a website. I now find that you are better off not saying anything to anyone about where you park. One of our favorites in Norfolk now has signs up after someone put it of the Facebook Website.

We visit West Bay often. In the winter it’s dead - no one in the pubs, shops or restaurants. Car parks empty - what a wasted opportunity. I think they all miss the glaringly obvious - people with MHs are older, responsible, definitely not rowdy (well with the exception of @swanseajack13) and possibly the only section of the population with disposable income to spend in said pubs, restaurants and shops......

And the time and opportunities (retired!!) to give business out of season.

Yes, the cassettes, individually, are less than 50 litres - but it only takes three to reach that amount.
