The van had its annual service and MOT yesterday by the mobile mechanic we've known for years. He took it for its test first and then brought it back to service after it had passed.

All was fine except that the nearside front brake pad fell into two parts when it was released as whatever was holding them together had failed. There had been no sign of any problem during normal driving and, obviously, the efficiency had been good enough to pass the test but a good job it was found before a failure in use.

As Paul, the mechanic, said, that's why you have regular servicing.

Not uncommon for the pad to part from the metal on vehicles that stand a lot due to rust between pad and backing plate.

Not a major problem if the pad comes off. Steel on steel will stop you eventually...:)

Crumbling brake pads isca regular item on motorhome servicing, I can't remember the last time I had to replace pads that were actually worn out.
