A class
Exp
Since 2010
Our van, A Class Hymer, is now 5 years old and ready for a cam belt change. Graham has set himself the task of phoning round for a price.
In order to get a benchmark, his first call was to T. J. Vickers, Fiat main dealer in Telford,
'Between £2,000 and £3,000' !!!
Blimey! I know we're in inflationary times, but something tells me they don't want the job. 🤔

Cam belt change isn't an easy job on an A-Class. You're right, they don't want the job.

I'd consider £500 about right - if it included replacing the water pump too.

Might be because its an A-class - was the first question I was asked.

We chose FIAT - Motus Commercials Gloucester and paid £891.72
Including - Cambelt and waterpump kit, Aircon belt, Aux belt, Antifreeze & Any seals required

Could get it cheaper from a Non fiat garage but Motus in Gloucester are the only company I have ever used who on settling the bill said -' we got the job done more quickly so we have reduced the bill'

No surprise there.
You now know how much Fiat main dealers expect to make on service and repair.
Your local commercial van garage will change it for around £500. Bit more for A. Class?

Windy Ridge garage next to Spinneys at Holmes Chapel £345 including water pump and belts admittedly a C class.

If you are near Telford why not try Dave Newell. I was impressed when I had my vehicle serviced by hime and he has done cambelts in the past.

Did our cambelt \ water pump. Maybe he should get himself cloned and open a Scottish branch!

Adams Morey Portsmouth only £573 for my B678DL.
I saw that on a previous post Lenny HB however I think you had a good discount didn’t you what year did you have yours done?🤔 Pompey would be a fair bit further for me as well😊

As a money making scheme timing belts must have served the automotive industry very well. Hopefully with EVs we’ll see the back of them?
Does anybody know if any of the present crop of van platforms use chains?

Sprinter...

I know it's not "current crop" but the 3ltr Ducato is also chain, but I'd certainly not recommend one of those after owning one.

Cheers

Erwin Hymer at Stafford are Fiat Professional. They did my Hymer A-class four years ago without any fuss. They said only the timing belt needed doing.

Not sure why they all panic at a class vans , the belt is changed from underneath mostly anyway and it's the same under an a class than a coachbuilt. Nearly everything is accessed underneath so they need a big ramp or a pit. But the one on my hymer was done on the ground on axle stands when I got it done

Thanks for that. I know the garage. We're planning on a trip to Ludlow this week, anyway - if it stops raining 🤔. We'll drop in and see them.

£500 on an A Class. Snap his hand off.

Edit. From what I read above, clearly, I'm wrong. Apologies for doubting your advice. My assumption was made on the £500 I paid for a Coachbuilt, and my understanding that working on an A Class was that much more difficult.

A cambelt is a cambelt, the engine compartment is just the same as a panel van, the stuff bolted to the back of the cab makes no difference to the job in hand.
If they are wanting silly money for a simple cambelt they are taking the urine, they see a big expensive motorhome and try it on.
It's a £500 job, unless it's an Italian supercar.

Not at any Fiat Professional Garage.🤷‍♂️

Been trying to find a decent Independent garage to do the servicing on our van……non come highly recommended anywhere near where I live.

Fiat quoting £650+, which doesn’t include a water pump or service. Fiat say no need for a water pump change. Luckily I’ve got a few years before needing a cambelt.

I used to live in your part of the world and used Westcountry Motorhomes a few times. They were always good, I recall they replaced a cambelt on my 2006 Ducato. However, it was a few years back and things change? The workshop is on the A38 going towards Bristol Airport (Lower Weare), not their showroom near Brent Knoll - you probably know them?
