We are off to France and then Spain and Portugal soon we hope. I am going to have to use the ugly "Angles Morts" signs, but I am trying to find a way to only fit them temporarily when we are in French urban areas. and be able to put them on and take them off easily and quickly. At the moment I can put the side ones on the inside of the front part of the windows in our A class. But the problem is temporarily attaching the rear one.

I am thinking of permanently sticking a steel plate the same size as the sign on the rear and painted in a colour to match the paint on my motorhome. That way I will be able to simply attach and detach a magnetic version of the sign when needed. I know that I will then have a steel plate on the back permanently but it will look a lot better than one of these signs.

I am sure that somebody would have thought about this before but I can't seem to find anything like this on sale. Has anybody managed to buy these metal plates please.

Won't you create a blind spot if you mount them on the front of the cab side windows ?

Think you'll find it's directly in your line of (sideways) sight - just done a mock up to test.

We are doing that trip at the moment and our stickers are in the van. Most vans are not wearing them.
Thanks for that. In my experience most French vans are allegedly under 3.5t so they say do not need the signs. They play the same game at the Autoroute toll booths, insisting they are Class 2 :ROFLMAO:

That would be ironic wouldn't it. :ROFLMAO:

With my A class it is forward of where I sit and in front of the steering wheel. In reality it is probably no more of a blind spot than you get with the A pillar on a C class. My wing mirrors are forward of it and mounted up high. They have two mirrors and the smaller one covers the area anyway.

Stick the Angles Mort sticker to some plastic sheet then use adhesive magnetic tape on both surfaces. Alternatively use sticky velcro pads on the van and sign then remove when home, using "sticky stuff remover" shouldn't leave any residue at all.

The question of only having to use them in urban areas has come up before - I believe this was a suggestion when the law was being drafted, but afaik no-one has ever been able to point to where it says in the final decree that it only applies in urban areas. Unless they can, the requirement applies everywhere.
(Having said all of which, we ignored it in France last autumn (although we're 4.25, externally virtually identical to 3.5 models,) as did the vast majority of other vans that weren't liners or 8.5m+ tag axle.)

According to my wife there was a discussion a few weeks back on the Carthago Owners group on Farcebook - someone reckoned you can get clear plastic film on Amazon that sticks to your van and the Angles Morts sticker simply sticks on that. The stuff is Luxshield Clear Paint Protection Film - £8.99.

As for Spriddler's point about stickerphobia, I wouldn't mind if there was just one common Blind Spot sticker, but there seems to be other countries already talking about doing similar! And while I'm all in favour of making life safer for cyclists, there doesn't seem much logical difference between the risk posed by a van up to 3500kg and one just over...

Taken from a previous post on the subject:

Where should the stickers be placed?

Stickers must be visible on both sides and at the back of the vehicle „in all circumstances”, explains the French regulation. This means that the signs must be placed between 0.90m and 1.50m above the ground – except for special cases.

Stickers must be placed in such a way that they don’t cover the vehicle’s regulatory plates and inscriptions, any of the lights or signals, and don’t hinder the driver’s field of view.

The last bit is relevant. So, if you're involved in an accident, it may be difficult to prove you weren't to blame. Just saying. The lowest part of my cab windows is 1.3m off the ground. The top of the sign would be 1.55 from the ground, which I guess would contravene the regulations.

We use these with the suction cup option. Not cheap but easily removed and attached.

Thanks Mike. That looks like what we want. Do they stay stuck on at speed? They are based in Germany, do they deliver to the UK?

They deliver to UK. We stick them on in towns and take them off when leaving so haven’t used above 30mph but have been fine at that.

They also do a low tack adhesive version that is removable but we have not tried those.

Do the top of the suction cups unscrew so you can take the sign off but leave the cups on? That would be very easy then

Did they charge any tax on delivery?

Used the suction pad angles morts plate all way down through France on motorways into Spain and back again. No problems at all. Plates are made of aluminium or similar light alloy.

Easy to apply and remove and yes the tops are threaded on to the suction pads and do screw on/off however, we found it easier to ease the suction caps of the door to remove the plates. Leaves no marks.

There is a video on you tube of a German company testing the different types of angles morts stickers, magnetic and suction pad types using a power washer to replicate motorway/driving conditions I guess. Worth having a look.

We didn’t have to pay any tax when they were delivered but it’s a possibility.

Though the suckers unscrew we find it quicker to remove the stuckes from the van - just have to make sure where you stick hem to next time is fairly clean.

The flasher really need to be on the offside & at the rear if it cannot be put on the roof.
Has your flasher got the radio signal?
If it is a 'homologated' one it has to have?

I saw my first spanish angulos muertos sticker yesterday ,on an amazon delivery van! They are voluntary here at present.
mentioned on a discussion here( with subtitles)
