Sorry about this. I thought I had this one pegged, but I am starting to doubt myself.

The rules are that if your bus is plated at more than 3500kg then you need 'angles morts' stickers all over it, regardless of length.

I have a 3500kg Rimor and tow a small 500kg trailer, so my concern is whether the Train Weight has any bearing on the 'angles mort' rules? I think it doesn't, but my French isn't good enough to interpret the fine print in the French legislation. Has anyone seen anything definitive about plated weight v train weight?

Obviously, if I have to, I will stick them on. However, I'd rather not, because, I think that: a) most cyclists have enough nous to not get too close to bigger vehicles, b) I stick to dual carriageways whenever possible, c) I give cyclists the 1.5m distance, and d) because the stickers are truly fugly. Thanks in advance,

Been in France for few weeks now, all the lorries have A M stickers on them.
A lot-not all-of the real big French Camping Cars have the stickers.
Hardly seen any on ’normal‘ size C C, wouldn’t know if they are over 3.5 but unless you get stopped for something it’s hard to tell which van is over!
Only seen sticker on one C C and trailer.
We carry our stickers but haven’t used them!

If they have no 80,90,100 km/h stickers on the back they are under 3,5t. Over have to have speed stickers.

If you are concerned then the downside to putting them on is a few £ for the stickers. You will not get fined for impersonating a larger vehicle.

Been over here for a while. Not many have stickers on. Only some German vans. But seen many Germans who are clearly over without them.

Last year we had them on and had a really difficult job getting the unsightly things off. This year we've scanned them onto good quality photo card and covered this with clear fablon so the adhesive edge is all around but a smaller contact patch.

They live under the lounge cushions where they look much better. Like a lot of others we take the chance. We also stay away from large towns and cities.

Having just spent six weeks touring in France, (and Spain), we saw several m/hs sporting the stickers, as well as lorries.

Having said that, what good do they do? By the time you can read the sticker you are already in the dead spot.

Thanks all, but does anyone know the actual French law? Breaking the law abroad has always been a worry for me, as my command of Yerp languages is only good enough for restaurants, shops and campsite receptions.

We'll you learn something new every day. Thanks. I've seen hundred of vans this last year but very few with those speed stickers on.

Does that mean I've got to get some to accompany the French ones under the lounge cushions:smiley:

I looked at this website a few weeks ago and it seems to agree with my understanding. However, the French traffic laws frequently display a common theme that unless it has been notified as legal, it is not (in UK, it is usually the opposite).

So it is a very specific point.

In France, does "total authorized laden weight" equate to "gross train weight" or the plated/actual weight of the moho as written in the V5C? It seems so daft that a 3500kg Moho towing a 5m long 1500kg trailer does not have to be stickered, but a 3501kg 6m long moho does.

Incidentally, until the start of this year I WAS driving a 3500khg moho with a 1500kg car trailer!

Just looking for clarification.........are the stickers only required if you are over 3500kg and towing (and a French resident)?......I’m not sure they are mandatory for UK drivers of a motorhome over 3.5t which isn’t towing and there also appears to be some dubiety if the stickers only apply to residents! All confusing!

You have to have these on mohos over 3.5tonnes?? I thought it was only applicable to goods vehicles!🤷‍♂️

Every days a school day🤔🤔

No.Only for french camping cars where the rules require them

No It is something like 'poids brut de train' ? Hopefully a French owner will enlighten us soon.

Only for French camping cars & germans if their rules require them? No if over 3500kgs & not towing they are required.

the speed signs aren't required unless french registered camping car & if so they are needed whether towing or not if over 3,5T.

only if french registered

We were in Gravelines on Saturday on the way to the tunnel. There were 21 vans there, French, Belgian and German. Most looked to be under 3500. Not one sticker.

Been to France 3 times since the AM law came it I've not bothered with them I'm 4.5t.
On the lorries are lot are so worn out you can hardly see them.

No it means that the French register their vehicles empty with little or no payload and are usually overweight but no one cares

The actual legislation only requires them in urba areas but is charcateristically vague about what consists an urbanisation.

I think we will be a tad overweight on the run back to the tunnel. Couple of cases of Vacqueyras and some cheeses...

Still not putting fugly stickers on.

In France at the moment and on the last camp site out of about 40 van only 1 had the stickers (a Belgian). Many of the vans were well over 7m and some over 7.5. I know there are some larger vans "plated" at 3500kg but these all had 2 electric bikes and all the kit! (Sat dish, solar, awning -:ROFLMAO: even air con) Spoke with one French guy and he said that they do not put the stickers on as it makes it easier for the police to know they are over 3500kg and should be driving at the lower speed limits!:ROFLMAO:

During one of our detours around a town recently, I found myself being shadowed by two cyclists on the pavement. On quick glance over, it appeared they wanted to jump off the kerb and onto the road, but as they were matching my speed, they couldn't. Stupid I thought, but they seemed oblivious to the dangers of running alongside a vehicle which could have a blind spot. If I'd had my angle Morts signs on, they may have been more aware I thought.
As I don't have a blind spot, closer inspection of these two clowns, I saw they were two bike mounted Gendarmes. Eventually they jumped off the pavement into the road and rode very close and fast; bike relative, behind me. A few Kms later, I did a right turn in front of them and proceeded on my merry way. I'm sure they could have pulled me over if they wanted as I'd broken their rules, but they didn't. Was it because it wasn't on the top of their priority list / they didn't speak English so won't pull over UK vans or the fact they didn't see anything wrong.:X3:
For the rest of the trip, they remained securely stuck to the inside of my boot wall. ::bigsmile:

Exactly my point, 😃 when in Rome....dont do it unless you're very obviously over.

Last time I had a count up there were more foreigners than French with Crit d'air stickers.

I keep saying this, l do believe registering for Crit d‘air puts you in their Data Base particularly after B….. and the fact it cost less than a Pint of Ale encourages people to sign up.

I don’t know what the Gendarmes are interested in really. When we were sat at Poole waiting for the Ferry last week less than half the Brit vehicles had the correct U.K. stickers on. That would have been lots of easy fines. Funnily enough we were searched, the van plus me but not Nick for some reason, didn’t even open the fridge.

Whilst staying with our friends he was stopped and breathalysed, his French is fluent having worked there for 30 years. He was panicking when he saw them as he’d forgotten his wallet with licence and ID which they’re really strict about and will fine on the spot. None of this wander along to your local Police station within 72hrs like here.Fortunately they were more interested in complimenting him on his French which he speaks with a West Country accent even though he doesn’t have one in English!

Bon après-midi à tous et à chacun.... et bonne traduction google aussi

Saw my first Angles Mort stickers today, on a Swiss coach in Eastbourne.

Eastbourne is very big on English language schools for foreigners so we get lots of European coaches.
