I am a newbie
So we have purchased the Motorhome, sorted out the storage for when it arrives, joined the caravan and motorhome club and subscribed to the forum. Might be time for a lie down:D

Still got the insurance to sort out, once we receive the registration and a few extras to sort out with the supplier.

But my attention has turned to kiting it out, there is so much stuff out there, we may need a trailer as well.

Any advice on what is practical and useful tips would be appreciated and best websites / stores to use. I have had a brief look online and in our local go outdoors.

Thanks in Advance

Make sure dealer, if there is one, throws in Electric hookup cable and some Thetford goodies to start you off with the toilet cassette.
After that, there’s nothing essential that you cannot initially borrow from your house.
Of course you will want to get some goodies but try and resist getting too much at first then at least you can spread the buying endorphins out!:)
A couple of rolls of non slip matting always a good choice especially when starting out and cupboards not yet rammed full!

we are still learning
Go for a couple of nights away, take the minimum and spend as little as possible, then see what you need.
Better than taking masses, spending lots and seeing what you don't need.
Could not have put it better! Don't waste money on stuff you think you need. Have a break....Look forward to the ups and downs and work to suit.
Either way...just enjoy the trip.

Buy what you need when you need it.
Its no hardship to do without something for just one trip but you could buy a load of tat today that you'll never actually need or use.

First time out I realised we didnt have a frying pan to cook breakfast....so I used a big saucepan then bought a frying pan later.

A big welcome Tony. Which van did you opt for as it's good to understand the load capabilities of your van before thinking of kit and equipment.

All the best,

Andrew

Buy only when you say "I need ........".

Otherwise you'll be forever going to "bring and buy" meets only to find no-one buys, they just want to shift the embarrassments they bought trying to out think the situation.

Best thing to buy is a paper and pencil, take them with you on your first few trips. When your sitting there and realise you need something write it down.

Ever since lighting was by Calor gas.
Start with the essentials only.......corkscrew, loo roll, knife and fork, tea bags etc..........then add what you find you need.
After all, you 'aint goin' to Mars ;)

Welcome to the Fun, Tony.

Don’t rush, but take your time.

It’s surprising how little you can get away with, yet many seem to be in a hurry to spend money on kit they may not use. It’s much less about the equipment you have. Much more, what you manage to do with it.

We are, I think, in the same place.
Hoping to pick up my first , new to me, motorhome next week.

For kitting out we have looked at some good stuff in Go Outdoors or Towsure.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your new purchase.

Everyone has given good advice, it’s so easy to go mad and buy loads of stuff you don’t need or use (we certainly did!)

But a good tip would be to spend the first night or two somewhere very local, maybe up the drive (but given you’ve mentioned storage then that might not be possible). This way when you suddenly discover you’ve not brought something, it’s easy to nip home to get it and decide whether you want to buy another X for the MH or just remember to pack X from home when you go on you’re trip.

Go for a couple of nights away, take the minimum

Stay as close to home as possible (I'm guessing seeing as you mention 'storage' you cannot park at your house?) and book just for one night to start with.
Do what everyone suggests and take virtually nothing. if you are missing something it's only for one night, won't kill you.

If that approach doesn't suit, and if it is feasible - you mention 'we' - take both your car and the motorhome to the site and one of you can drive home quick to get whatever it is you cannot live without for the next 12 hours!

We always have a notebook to write down what we're about to run out of (loo roll, wash-up liquid, bla bla bla!) or what it would have been nice to have.

And enjoy - that's the point!

Welcome to the forum, all god advice above, would take a folding stool even in PVCs the cupboards can be high. Don't forget that a lot of the stuff at specialist stores are available at other places, B&M poundshops, range to name a few. My stool was a cheapie been using it for almost 10 years now. Don't think anyone has mentioned gas. Try to borrow a bottle (full) or try places like freegle for a free one and exchange for a full one, then decide if you are going down the refillable bottle route. We use our redundant bottle when using the gas BBQ at home.

We're on our fourth motorhome and the first thing I do before putting anything inside is to line all the cupboards with non-slip matting. Dead cheap from B & M Bargains and they usually have lots of other stuff suitable for motorhomes - collapsible colanders, buckets, bowls, melamine crockery, plastic glasses, storage jars, plastic storage boxes etc etc. Then you can start on the expensive stuff as and when you feel you need (want?!) it. Happy motoring.
