Crime reported. Warden recorded it in diary. My suspicion is that it’s still on site but a walk round revealed nothing.

Commiserations. Our push bikes are so old & rusty that no one would steal them, thank goodness. They are, however, lightweight and work well!

Site has good security then????
Don’t they have an insurance for this sort of thing-we pay enough to belong to the club!

I wouldn’t expect the CCC insurance to cover my bike really. However as I tend to use these sites because they are safe and secure I’m having to recalibrate my expectations.

As it was locked to itself it would have needed to be carried or possibly someone cut the lock off.

That’s worrying.

We only lock our bikes through the frame and rear wheel when on “safe” sites. Looks like a rethink is in order.

Sorry to hear of your woes.

It was only a metre from the van so clearly I must have been gassed!

My alarm system has APC (Alarm Protection Circuit) which I religiously us to protect my bikes when travelling. To be fair I have never even considered using it actually on a site, especially a CCC site, like you I just click the lock and leave it

I too will re-evaluate my bike security

I like your point about buying a new bike, I was involved in a nasty crash last month and wrote my car off. I have had more fun and spent more time with brochures test driving new ones than the time I spend feeling sorry for myself after the crash!

A long time now
We were on a site at Ringwood early Sunday morning and sat outside having a coffee I saw a transit van with 3 scruffy bods in clocking every thing as they drove slowly past I thought these don't look like campers ,I was right as 10 minutes later a police car drove past, three bikes had been pinched from one van and the police said there was a car boot sale a mile down the road and it wasn't worth pursuing .

Sorry to hear about the theft, but it raises an interesting point. Many times I have heard said that Aires in Europe are unsafe and attract thieves. That is especially so when people report thefts of their bike from an Aire. The reality is that any tempting targets attract thieves almost everywhere.

In our current van our bikes travel in the back partially dismantled. When on site I lock them through the frame to the towing eye with this monster http://thebestbikelock.com/best-chain-lock/ Whilst the towing eye is only wound in with the lock attached its impossible to wind out.

PS - what sort of bike are you after - i may have one for sale - apparently the new house rule is n-1

Sorry to hear about your bikes as I know how you feel, our bikes where stolen from a railway station just outside Nice last November. When we got home we bought to BTwin bikes from Decathlon, they're Riverside500s. We bought last years model at a cost of £180 each, they where also the lightest bikes in that price range coming in around 13kilos.

It was bound to happen sooner or later. I lock everything up to something. No matter how small the value, someone will want it eventually.
I even saw a Dutch woman sneak off with a stainless steel dog bowl once, pathetic.

The site is reasonably local about 5 mile or so to me, and is surrounded by, Shall we say dubious inhabitants of a residential and traveling nature

We always lock our rusty ones to something immobile and to each other - we take SUCH care of them!! They are always locked on to the bike rack too! No wonder they haven't been pinched.

Many motorbikes are stolen every day when "locked to themselves", it just does not work.

A few pounds on a vibration alarm and it might have been another story.

Never understood why people think a campsite is safe ?

It's like a shopping centre to theives and a perfect place to Nick bikes and scooters etc
Loads of people coming and going constantly. .no one knows who is meant to be there and who isn't , and assuming bevause other folk are on a campsite makes them trustworthy is unfounded.

Give me a remote wildspot or a carpark with only a few other vans around so you know which face belongs to which van anyday.

Don't get many random theives wandering around in the middle of nowhere looking for bikes to pinch.

Update: apparently they tried to get the bikes off the back of the caravan next to me too. There was a gate out to the main road about 50 m away and mine was the first van someone entering that way. Maybe they should consider locking the gate at night?

Locking it to itself is never going to work. They just pick them up and wander off. Anyone seeing them just thinks they have a puncture. Lock it to something solid like a tree. The fancy bikes are always going to attract attention.

We were at a site in Roses ( Spain ) last week. Loads of signs all over with pictures of a guy in stripped shirt with big bag on his back with bike etc in it. Camp site had security boxes.

Honfleur last year had white vans driving round and someone had two electric bikes removed from the back of their MH during the night.

Unfortunately you have to look after your own stuff nowadays.
